On Reading Graphic Novels discussion

Over Christmas, I was gifted Alan Moore's, Swamp Thing Vol 1, and Neil Gaiman's, Sandman Vol 1. Finished them both already and wow! What masters of thier craft! Not only the writers, but the artists as well. I've got some great reading ahead of me...

for christmas i got V for Vendetta by Moore and also got Sandman Vol 1! ha! read them both. now im on Vol 3 of sandman. wow, those are incredible.

V for Vendetta was splediferous!!! Everyone who digs the graphic novel seems to diss the movie, but I think the movie was a good adaptation. I like the way the movie fleshed Eve out.

I just finished volume 2 of ST, and wow! That battle with Arcane is awesome. I love what ST's self discovery is turning into, now that Alec Holland is laid to rest. Moore's writing and Bissette's art is definitely a winning combination.

I have Sandman vol 2 on the way, and From Hell sitting on the shelf. (It's pretty daunting...)

My only wish for Moore's Swamp Thing is that his work overlapped with Bernie's Wrightson's time on the book. That would have been amazing.

yeah, i like the V for Vendetta movie, but it was a bit different. its really just an interpretation of the graphic novel. i did like it, though. i havent seen the movie in about a year, but wasnt the ending of the movie different from the novel?

nothing is better then the sandman books all ten are worth reading in order!!

I will agree wholeheartedly with Don. My boy handed it to me a few months ago and said, "get an education." *giggles* Man, I soared through those ten and I wish that there was more. Still not sure how I feel about the ending, but when I was reading Kingdom Come, does anyone else get a sense a familiarity?

I didn't like Sandman Vol. 1 and so I didn't feel compelled to read the rest of the series. It's too much of an investment.

Besides, the greatest series ever, hands down, is Preacher.

I've been trying to get a copy of Preacher here for weeks, and no library around has it... maybe I can convince my wife to buy it as a birthday present... :D

i've read the first 5 or so sandman volumes and they are great, although i still haven't finished it (should get going on that, hehe)

i've yet to read swamp thing, but my brothers tell me that it is very good and not too "heavy" for moore, so should check that out too

loved v for vendetta! my favorite moore novel (much more interesting than watchmen, at least to me). also, i did prefer the novel ending to the movie ending.

preacher is awesome. read all but the last graphic novel, which my brother just brought during family reunion last week. hopefully it ends well.

also, if anybody needs something to read that is vertigo-esque, my brother keeps on recommending to me transmetropolitan, lucifer, and y the last man (although heard the end was disappointing for y)

Try the League of Extraordinary gentlemen by Moore. It is SO much better than the Movie. Also try Planetary and Global Frequency.

I would also give Powers a try by Bendis. Currently my favorite title.

oh yea, i totally forgot about league. although the movie is so bad it is almost good, haha. also, like doug, i have also heard great things about planetary and powers, as well as ex machina (vaughn).

Le Bricoleur, Vol. 1 is a bit awkward but if you ever find the time, pursue the series. I promise it gets much better!

I personally enjoyed V for Vendetta both as a movie and a comic. They're different, but both are really well done.

I've heard that Bissette isn't keen on the horror stuff, but he still did a great job on swamp thing, can look at some pages / panels for ages.

I think it was an early Bissette/Moore story that was the 1st DC comic that was put out without the Comic Code stamp. A nasty zombie scene with Abby.
Then the flowering of English language comix in the mid-late '80s happened.

I've just read the Swamp Thing series. When I first read the first volume I wasn't compelled the continue reading the rest. However, I did, and boy was I glad in doing so. Moore is genius, and I pity the writer who took over Swamp Thing after Moore. There's nothing left for the character to do! Just starting Sandman btw ^^

I just started Sandman myself and it is fantastic. I wish someone had tipped me off to it before.

I'm reading The Crow now and it's fantastic as well.

I am currently reading through Swamp Thing and Hellblazer. I'm really enjoying both. Sandman was great, especially most of the stand alones, which are best read after the series.

Try Grant Morrison's run of Swamp Thing. It never became a trade paperback, there are 5 issues, and he totally took it in a different direction. It's not Alan Moore, but it's an intense read.

I liked the trades of Sandman I read at my library a while back, intend to get the trades for my own very soon.

I read the first issue of Moore's Swamp Thing through DC's "After Watchmen" thing, and it was pretty damn good. I'll have to look for that too. :)
