Kristin | 67 comments The 2013 Hugo Nomination period is officially open (see below). Any thoughts on eligible books? Read anything noteworthy? Not noteworthy?

The 2013 Hugo Awards are hosted by LoneStarCon 3, the 71st World Science Fiction Convention. Members of LoneStarCon 3 and Loncon 3 who join by January 31, 2013, and all members of Chicon 7, the prior year's Worldcon, may submit nomination ballots. Note that only one ballot per person will be counted, even if you are a member of more than one of these conventions.

Nominations close on Sunday, March 10, 2013, 23:59 EDT (Monday, March 11, 06:59 UTC/GMT).

Nominations will be announced, and voting will open by early April.

Gail | 16 comments OK, I've submitted my nominating ballot. I nominated four novels:

Jack Glass by Adam Roberts
The Drowning Girl by Caitlin R. Kiernan
Whispers Under Ground by Ben Aaronovitch
The Hollow City by Dan Wells

Of these, I would be very surprised if any except the Kiernan made the ballot, but you've got to nominate what seems best. Frankly, I had some trouble coming up with a list of books to nominate, because I wasn't that impressed with most of what I read from last year.

Matt | 18 comments Gail, are you recommending these books?

I did a really bad job of keeping up with new sci-fi in 2012. I loved Ian Tregillis' The Coldest War and Paolo Bacigalupi's The Drowned Cities though. The latter would be my pick for novel of the year.

Kristin | 67 comments I fully admit that I just don't have time to keep up with new releases. I wait for the recommendations to trickle down after they've been vetted a bit.

Reading time aside, I see that The Drowning Girl by Kiernan just won a Triptree Award. Kim Stanley Robinson's 2312 was considered.

Beth The Drowning Girl has also gotten a Nebula Award nomination and a Bram Stoker Award nomination. Seems to be one of the "it" books of the year, although the Stoker nomination was the first time I had come across it. Moving it up in my to-read pile.
