Don, I skimmed the Goodreads book description of _Atlantis Found_ and got kick out of the following:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Dirk Pitt, indestructible hero of 14 previous Clive Cussler novels ..., makes James Bond look like a tuxedoed, martini-swilling poseur."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LOL
Clive Cussler certainly is a prolific author! The Goodreads description says:
"Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks..."
I'll bet my boat-loving husband would like his books. Have any of them been made into movies?
Maybe I'll borrow a Cussler book from the library for him.
Which one would you suggest for a first read?
Clive Cussler is a scuba diver and has been visiting shipwrecks his whole life. His NUMA Files series of novels are underwater books but most of the Dirk Pitt novels also involve water scenes in the story lines as well.Here's a description of him from Fantastic Fiction:
Clive Cussler grew up in Alhambra, California, and attended Pasadena City College before joining the Air Force. He went on to a successful advertising career, winning many national honours for his copywriting. Now a full-time bestselling author, he has also explored the deserts of the American Southwest in search of lost gold mines, dived in isolated lakes in the Rocky Mountains looking for lost aircraft and hunted under the sea for shipwrecks of historic significance, discovering and identifying more than sixty. Like his hero, Dirk Pitt, he is also an avid enthusiast of classic cars. He is married with three children, and divides his time between Colorado and Arizona.
Clive Cussler is getting older and co-writes his books with other authors now. The Dirk Pitt series is now being co-written with his son, Dirk Cussler. The Oregon Files series is now co-written with Jack DuBrul.
Joy, I haven't read any of Cussler's books (though I think I have one buried somewhere in my stacks of yet- unread books :-)) but I can answer your question about movies. At least one of the Dirk Pitt novels, Sahara, has been adapted as a movie, and the film version is quite good, IMO. Matthew McConaghy (spelling?) plays Pitt.
Thank you, Don and Werner for the info.After reading Werner's post, I found the film, "Sahara" (2005) at IMDb: ====>

At the webpage, it says:

PLOT: "Master explorer Dirk Pitt goes on the adventure of a lifetime of seeking out a lost Civil War battleship known as the "Ship of Death" in the deserts of West Africa while helping a UN doctor being hounded by a ruthless dictator."

Netflix, here I come! :)
PS-I've put in a request for the Cussler book, _Serpent_ (NUMA files book) at our library. The Goodreads summary mentions the "battered remains of the sunken Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria". So at least Ed would have something to relate to. Our library files show publishing date of 1999.
P.S. For the benefit of interested readers, NUMA stands for:"National Underwater & Marine Agency" (exploration team).
Atlantis Found was a good read. I could say it is typical Clive Cussler but that really is misleading because the only thing typical about Cussler's books is that the hero always comes out on top.He writes great adventure stories. This was another.
Glad you enjoyed it, Don. Eddie is currently reading Cussler's _Serpent_. He says it's a good story but gets a little "draggy" in parts because of too much detail.
