Simple, No lies or any relationship will fail right from square one. Her tells her about the engagement. Tells her when it is ended and why. The heroine will have some soul searching to do. I would leave him but watch him. If in his free from women time he trots back to fiance -he's history, if he dates big time - he's history, If he morns the loss of her (heroine), his one true love, I would advance very slowly and hesitantly back to him.
Yes, I had a guy "used" his interest in me to break it off with another girl. (High school, so "girl" applies.) He downplayed his involvement with her, said she was the pursuer. Very painful for everyone involved. Told me this when he broke up with me. Still remember it 40 years later, though I've gotten over it. LOL!
Thanks girls :) the hero is really into leading lady so trying to figure out how to make it believable xxx
Only way out of that is if he never did ask first lady to marry him. Or in other words an arranged or forced marriage proposal.
I meant what subgenre? Paranormal, historical? And is he a beta hero? Because an alpha male would break up with the gf instead of getting engaged. :) Unless there was another reason he was with her?
Well, you could always have him discover she (the fiancée) really is a Real B!tch; however, that's been done quite a bit.Or, you could make the fiancée be really sweet...but find love/attraction at the same time he does, but she tells him first.
I also like Abigail's...must be another reason he was with her.
I don't think she was scared away. I like to think she's taking in all the advice you've given. To add my two cents in, I would think the leading lady would be upset that he wasn't honest w/her from the start. So I would feel, regardless of what she feels for him, she would approach this whole thing w/the guy w/caution. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice....
And making the other woman a bitch or awful person would make it too easy for the guy to leave her.
I have taken all advise on board now re arranging few things- thanks all so much xxxxxx ur all brill!! Xxx

Question- writing a book, leading lady falls for a guy who is engaged (didnt know) he tells her he has dumped her and wants leading lady - how would he go about this? What would you want him to say, do if you was the leading lady??
Hope made sense!
