I am looking for a good novel about depression, drug use, etc. Something really gritty. What would you recommend?

I know he was outed as selling A Million Little Pieces as a memoir when in reality it was just a fictional novel, but it was still a really good book. (And to be honest I find those who loved the book when it was a 'memoir' and then not when it suddenly wasn't are sort of hypocritical.) But that's off topic. Loved Valley of the Dolls too. Go Ask Alice is an okay read as well, though it's really propaganda against the drug world.

Every few years I re-read Go Ask Alice. Always trying to figure out if it's the real deal or propaganda. Still, to me, an intriguing quick read.

Digging the vein by Tony O'Neill

CURIOUS... how old was everyone when they first read this book? I read it almost in its entirety in one sitting during a snow storm when I was 15!

Here's a link to someone's version of the ten best addiction memoirs: http://www.thefix.com/content/10-best...

I liked Augustin Burrough's Dry. Also Elizabeth Wurtzel's More Now and Again was pretty good.

Go Ask Alice. Definitely.

I would recommend my novel, What Becomes a Legend Most. It has lots of sex, drugs, and rock and roll in it since it's about a female rock singer who struggles with drug use and a sexually abusive past. What Becomes A Legend Most by Kathey Norton

I second the Augusten Burrough's "Dry" vote, as well as most of his other memoirs. He struggled with drug and alcohol abuse and therefore a lot of his books cover the topic.

"Drinking; A love Story" by Caroline Knapp also illustrates alcohol abuse and depression.
