I'm wondering how this series compares to Michael Buckley's Sisters Grimm series? My daughter is devouring those (she is on book 8 of 9) and we are hoping to find a similar series. This series sounds like just the thing... Anyone have any opinions?

I think it depends on how old your daughter is...I've recently read this and find that this, although violent and gory, is at some points humorous as well. I've never read the Sister's Grimm series, but if your daughter has ever read the original Brother's Grimm stories then those have violence and (pardon the pun) are a bit grim at times...I suppose it's just dependant on her age to be honest. Hope this helps :)
Margaret wrote: "Too violent." Can you compare the violence to another book? Fairy Tales in general are really violent. Have you read Th eSisters Grimm series? Would you consider those violent? I'm just trying to get a reference point. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I've read both The Sisters Grimm and A Tale Dark and Grimm, very different. Sisters Grimm is more about adventure and they tend be fast paced with quirky characters. A Tale Dark and Grimm is darker, it's more of a long journey even though it is broken up into shorter stories...you don't really get to know the characters as well because it is narrated by an outside voice. That said...I know several little girls who have devoured this book over and over...the gore seemed to cause a bit of naughty glee.
If you try it and its not for her, the Overlander books by Suzanne Collins are a good mix of character and adventure, there are five books in the series.
I appreciate all your helpful comments! My daughter and I started reading it together, but last night I decided to stop after the chapter where Hansel is killed. My daughter was hesitant to keep reading it because of the narrator's comments on sending kids out of the room, etc., so she wanted me to read ahead first. I did and determined it's a bit more detailed than I'm ready for her to read. (The warlock's murder of young girls creeped ME out... I know they would bother my kiddo.) I think the book is very clever, and in a couple more years, when she is a bit older, I know she'll be able to handle the gore without having nightmares. (I'm going to finish reading it, though!)And Izzy, I will definitely check out the author's website. Thanks for the suggestion!
