What do you guys think? Was King Arthur real? Did he die or was he carried off to Avalon? Etc.? I already accidentally posted this topic under Breaking Dawn-sorry.

Old-Barbarossa Check out the Arthuriana group on this.
I think he was a Romano-British (or an amalgam of a few with the same title/name) cavalry commander around the year 500. Probably mainly active between the walls (Antonine and Hadrian's). Tales of him created a core myth that other stories were grafted onto.
One of many theories though.
Old mentions of him are in, amongst others:
The Gododdin
The Mabinogion
The History of the Kings of Britain

Yeah...I've heard that theory. I really don't like it, though...he needs to be in shining armor for me, and be wed to Guinevere, and all that...but I can accept it, I suppose...I need to quit it with the elipses.

Jon Laiche apparently this is an old thread, but as to the real Arthur, see John Morris, The Age of Arthur, for a good treatment of the real Arthur. and no, deleted, did not wear shining armor or marry Guinevere, etc. those are part of the Arthurian literature, which is a whole other subject.

Ladysw (Sara) If you want believe that Arthur exists, it's a matter of faith. However,it's interesting to note the older Welsh versions of Arthur depict him as quasi villain. Here is a book that explains everything:King Arthur: Hero and Legend
What is great is that we can't really prove whether or not he really existed/exists. I think it's better that way.
