ABANDONED. Girl/boy from current time ends up in ancient Ireland (Tara) and gets involved with the fight of good over evil. More than 1 book, but they are stand alones - not necessarily a series.

The biggest point I remember is that nightmares are actually real horses (mares) that bring despair. Many other characters from Tara mythology are also involved - including Niall and Medb.

The Albion Trilogy by Stephen Lawhead?
Thanks! Both are good suggestions so far and I've added them to my TBR list, but not the one I was thinking about originally.

Another long-shot, but maybe A Wizard Abroad by Diane Duane? Most of the book takes place in present Ireland, but involves "time-slides" into the past. The boy and girl pair could be the protagonists: Nita and Ronan.
