That reminds me, I need to ask my students here if they will cook me some porcupine. I'm living in China, so I've already eaten most of the food mentioned in the book. FYI, black eggs basically taste like pickled eggs and congee is just watery rice porridge. Pumpkin seems to be the most popular flavor.

I don't think porcupine is actually cooked here, or maybe just not in my region. If you are interested in chicken feet or pig pancreas I can help you out though. China has different food depending on the region, and in Xi'an, where I live, it is noodle and dumpling country. I will ask around, just in case.
Maybe it was all the talk of poisons, but for some reason I began to wonder if "porcupine" might actually be blowfish.
It was a great passage, that was also a comment on excessive wealth I think. Other than blowfish, it also made me think of extreme sports.
I need a honeycake. A great book on Chinese food is Shark's Fin And Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China, highly recommended.
