The Time Traveler's Wife makes me cry so reliably that, even though I have read it several times, I refuse to bring it on mass transit of any kind because it's already made me ugly-cry on a bus once and that's more than enough. The book uses time travel to amplify and explore the ways in which people--even people who really love each other--can be in different places at different times in their lives, and some of the moments of missed connection are devastating. I love this book, but I recommend reading it alone, preferably at home!
