This book is about an orphan boy named Will who was raised in castle Redmount. When you teach a certain age you can attempt to join a group. Like warriors, cooks, scripts and ranger. He wanted to join the warriors but he was to lanky and skinny. He stumbled upon the rangers group because Halt ( his master) saw him creeping around the castle past curfew and thought he would be a good ranger. Rangers are known for the arts of stealth and bow and arrows. That's why Halt selected Will. Most of the book is him practicing with his master and the end is Will helped prevent the Gorlands from passing the plains and towards the castle. That was his first achievement as a ranger.the first book is more of a setup for the next books because there is about 10 of them.
If I were to rate this book I would give it a 4 out of 5. I'm very big into midevil times stuff which is exactly what this is. If I were to every go back in time it would definitely be in this time period. The author is great at describing the action scenes which I love.
I highly recommend this book who likes midevil times things like me. I'm writing this late so I already read the second one. The second one is way better! I would give that a 4.5 out of 5. But the first is still good.
The author is great at getting you into the story. He uses pathos and logos like there is no tomorrow. Basically everybody during that time period thought of everything through a logical standpoint. Which makes sense because the kings had to make decisions for the benefit of everyone else. The characters can be very emotional like for example when Will didn't make it into the battle school. He was absolutely devastated and I felt some what bad.
