Esther (estame) Hi team! Hope I'm not treading on anyone's toes starting this thread? I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for us with this toppler, the group ones are usually so much fun!

We can obviously change the name of the group when we know more, I literally picked the first thing that came into my head.

Kristie | 19334 comments Hi Team B!!! **waves** Just checking in. Thanks for setting up a thread for us EstaAmeliaR! Looking forward to seeing what our tasks are and getting started!!

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Yes, thanks for setting up the thread, EstaAmeliaR. I am really looking forward to working with our group! We have a super bunch!

message 4: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Hi team B, I can't wait to see what's in store for us this time around.

message 5: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Hi all! When I found out that I was on this team, I yelled "TEAM B!". Lexx wanted to know why I was yelling about tuberculosis. Not quite the same thing, but I'm sure we'll be just as deadly!

message 6: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19334 comments LOL! :D

message 7: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Deadly? I don't know about that, but B(ees) stings can be very nasty (especially when you're allergic to them) - and of course B(ees) make wonderful honey... ;)

I'm looking forward to toppling lots of book off (or on?) my tBr with this great team!
Let the others B aware of us!

message 8: by Ann (new)

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments Woohoo! Go Team B (Lmao @ TB!) I'm just itching to know the particulars of this toppler!

Esther (nyctale) | 5203 comments Hi team.

I proclaim myself the team ghost. I have not been around lately. But will be there. Not to worry.

We could be deadly to our competition! Or in certain youth cultures in Aus, mainly Indigenous, Deadly means awesome!

Ha! Well, every deadly team should at least have one ghost! :)

I know, I was just thinking about Bees - who are mostly not deadly to humans... ;)

message 14: by Esther (last edited May 30, 2015 08:58PM) (new)

Esther (estame) Hi everyone - I've been gophering and I so far have two that fit pulizter prize books - Gilead and The Hours plus The Appointment by Herta Muller (Nobel prize). I'll definitely be able to read more than those, so I will continue looking.

message 15: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments There are many more categories to be posted, so don't lock yourself into anything just yet.

message 16: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Such a tease....
The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympicswould cover The Olympics. I will tentatively put my hand up for that one.

message 17: by Esther (new)

Esther (estame) I don't think we will need anyone to create a chart this time because there isnt criteria that need to be fulfilled. Perhaps instead, when we make our reporting thread, we can create a single post each that we keep updating as we go along, so they can be easily tallied at the end?

Example:
1. BOOK/ CATEGORY / PAGE COUNT
2. Watched Film/ Category
3. BOOK / CATEGORY / PAGE COUNT

TOTAL POINTS = 25

Anyway, just an idea because I know how crazy those reporting threads can get.

I think you're right! Maybe the person who sets the thread up can also post a link in the first message to everyone's reporting message? Some other groups I'm in, do it that way.

message 19: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I'll wait until the whole toppler is up to start planning properly, but a quick looks suggests I could do:
Emmys x 2 at least
Oscars
Pulitzer
Nobel.

Probably could do 2-3 books that week if I pushed and depending on what I read.

message 20: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19334 comments I'd like to take on a pulitzer. I can guarantee one book, but I plan to try for two. I'm still trying to see what books fit in where. Are we allowed to double up on categories or do we need to try to get as many different categories as possible?

message 21: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jun 04, 2015 09:30AM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments I am going to start out conservatively.

I feel confident that I can read
Academy Award
Man Booker
Humor
Bailey's

I will probably be able to add more later after I have pulled some books together.

message 22: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) Hi, Team B. I'm not sure how much I'll read yet. I'll have to look closer at the categories. Right now, I don't have internet at home, so I probably won't get to update much, but that will just give me more time to read. :)

message 23: by Elsbeth (new)

I just saw that Jmom said we can read whatever we want - we don't have to finish all the different categories and we can read as many books for a catogorie that we want.
I'll just wait till all/more tasks are posted, before I chose - is going to be difficult (again) I think! :D

message 24: by Thing Two (new)

Thing Two (thingtwo) Hello Team B! I'm gathering books for this toppler. Any idea when the real rules will be distributed?

message 25: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments That's great news, Elsbeth. It makes things so much easier on everyone.

T2, I haven't read anything.

message 26: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Do you mean the rules (which are the same as usual but were hiding so I moved them close to the top) or the tasks (which are still being added to)?

message 27: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I have so many more options now that list of tasks has been added to overnight. We got this!

message 28: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19334 comments I think I know what I'm going to read! So excited that the Hugo was added because I want to read Redshirts. I read Fuzzy Nation for our space theme this month and want to check out more by John Scalzi. :)

I'm also planning to read The Color Purple for the Pulitzer. I'm not a very fast reader, so I probably won't get to more than that. Though, I've had To Kill a Mockingbird on my TBR forever and this would be the perfect time to read it. I always want to read more than I am capable of. lol

message 29: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2987 comments Ugh, I need to find the time to actually look at the categories and start gophering.

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19334 comments I keep finding more books that I want to read!! Never enough time. Get gophering, Lynn!

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments I plan on listening to The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, 2008 winner of the Pulitzer for fiction, as well as reading A Tale for the Time Being, short-listed for the 2013 Man Booker prize. I will also fit in a showing of A Beautiful Mind.

I, too, am a slower reader, sadly, but will hopefully be able to add more than this 25 points to the team's score before the end of the Toppler! Everybody read!!!!
Oh, poo! It doesn't start until the 13th! Well, at least man your battle stations!!

message 32: by Ann (new)

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments P.S. My gawd, with all these lists, my TBR is growing exponentially instead of shrinking!! I am now DROWNING in possibilities!!

message 36: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments I was looking at the historical fiction award winners (since I really love HF) and found 2 books I own... They both have more than 500 pages.... :(
So I'll keep looking for something else (otherwise I might just be able to finish 1 book during the whole Toppler week)...

message 37: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Yes, I already found 3 books I could read (not sure yet if I will really read these 3...):
For Pullizer Fiction, 2 finalists:
Kind van Sneeuw by Eowyn Ivey (2013) & The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich (2009).

And for The Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction: Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2007).

message 38: by Kerri (new)

Kerri I love the gopher, that's the best part isn't it, the gophering. I have found several books I want to read for the toppler and should be able to manage 4 of them since 3 I have access to as audiobooks. At this stage I plan to read Still Life, The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, The Maze Runner and Schindler's Ark.

How did you embed that .gif file? I can't figure it out so I had to just include the link, but I now see the link doesn't work on a smartphone, only on a laptop. :(

message 40: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19334 comments Kerri - Thanks! Yes, gophering is so fun, but my TBR keeps growing & there are more books than I can read!

Ann - I was on my laptop when I posted the gopher. :) I use photobucket.

Poo! Photo bucket isn't available to Canadians!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments You could add the gif as an image using the (some html is ok) ^^ at the top of the page for hints. Just replace the url in the code that you copy and paste from the menu with the url of your gif. Change the width and height numbers to suit your image.

So (I've added a space at the front between < and img):
< img src="http://media.giphy.com/media/iAyhMxfo..." width="400" height="250" alt="description"/>

becomes

description

Okay, my choice of A Tale for the Time Being was no good and was nixed. Only Booker prize WINNERS qualify. So I'm down to 15 points. I'll see what else I can come up with.

I use photobucket, Ann, and I'm Canadian. That's how I post badges.

message 50: by Ann (new)

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments I tried it today and it asked for my zip code. When I entered my postal code it told me it was invalid. I will go back and try again.
