Are you talking about the whole section in the book that's called "Fantine," or just the character?

I think, that yes, Fantine had a big heart and she was horribly treated, but also that she was naive. To believe that the Thernadiers would just take in her daughter and care for her, and then to send that money to the them, is proof of that. Yet, she couldn't have done anything else. She needed someone to take care of Cosette. I think that's why it's so tragic. She starts off as such a young girl- in the way she sees life and the way she lives, and ends up with such a different reality than she thought could even exist. I Dreamed a Dream really shows that, and it's heartbreaking.
