MJ | 207 comments Will I regret spending the full price of the new release DVD, or will it be worth it?

message 2: by Kelli (new)

Kelli | 5 comments Just add Starz until u watch the episodes then have it cancelled, that was the cheaper option for me

message 3: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments I don't think anyone would regret buying the DVD then you would have to watch if starz doesn't keep available

Zoey (rozannen) | 229 comments Hi MJ

Are you from Aus?? If so, some Coles stores have had the DVD on sale recently for $20, so that might be worth checking out.
I personally dont think you will regret it as I loved the show, so much that even though I do have Pay TV, I still bought the DVD when it came out :)

You could go to Ebay I'm sure people who bought it to watch will be reselling it by now.

Yes especially since it's only about a month and you can watch all episodes on demand, but you do need basic cable so if you don't have that a DVD or online streaming site would still be better.

MJ | 207 comments Cool, thx everyone. My main worry was that it would fail in the locations/finishes. Like those ones that have an obviously cardboard castle front, with a dodgy green screen behind it. They can be done so well... Burt not all manage it.

Don't worry about that it is all beautifully done.
Have you tried your local library for the DVDs?

Definitely dont have to worry about that MJ, there are no cardboard castles & dodgy green screens. The scenery & sets are amazing and even the CGI stuff like Colums legs or Ians missing leg have been done really well :)

MJ | 207 comments Yay, was so scared they were going to mess up one of my top fives. Can't wait to have a look.

message 11: by MJ (new)

MJ | 207 comments I almost caved and bought the DVD today. Why are they splitting a season in half? I know if I buy it at any point thru the series while still waiting for more to come... I'll go out of my head waiting for it... Still don't like my chances of waiting it out tho :/

The season aired in two parts, the first 8 episodes from August to September and the second half aired a little over six months later starting in April.

I suspect the release of a part one DVD was part of a marketing strategy to get more people interested (and subscribed to Starz) for the second half of the season.

Part two is listed on Amazon, but it has no release date yet. :( I'm not sure what to think in terms of when to expect it, it took them five months to release the DVD for part one, but I imagine they worked on some of the special features for part two along the way so it might not take as long for that release.

message 13: by MJ (new)

MJ | 207 comments Crap, I hadn't realized that much time had passed. Feels like it was only a few months back that I was cursing not having payTV.

So, the Outlander 1&2 are just about the Outlander book? Does that mean they are heading for a series per book?

message 14: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments yes - season 1 - both parts was Outlander

season 2 - currently filming - will be Dragonfly in Amber= i'd probably expect broken into 2 parts again

message 15: by MJ (new)

MJ | 207 comments Yay... now we just have to pull up with the wait!

I think that was the original plan, but I read somewhere that Ron said some books might need more than 1 season, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

message 17: by MJ (new)

MJ | 207 comments The more that better... it's just the delay that's the problem. They really should have been making these earlier! ;)

message 18: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Dennis Richardson (catrionarich) | 28 comments I am not upset about the time between seasons because that much time is needed to do a quality job! They will be in Scotland and I believe Prague, maybe England too and it is a multimillion dollar production. Just look at Game of Thrones or Downton Abbey and other super shows. We want the quality to stay extremely high and the details to remain authentic like they were in season 1. There is always a 10 month lag between Seasons. There has not been a date announced by Starz for Season 2 but speculation is that it will be April 2016 which would be the 10 month standard gap between seasons.

message 19: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Dennis Richardson (catrionarich) | 28 comments I am guessing it will take quite awhile before they release Part 2 of Season 1 on DVD or blu ray. If they follow HBO's model for Game of Thrones releases it happens about 1 month before the new season starts. I bought the blu ray of the first half of the season and recorded the second half of the season on DVR so I could get through Droughtlander 2 ;)

message 20: by MJ (new)

MJ | 207 comments Droughtlander. Lol

Yea, all for quality... Not so big on the patience front tho...

message 21: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments In my opinion, they knew early on that season two was picked up, they should have started casting then. I am all for quality, and we have gotten that, but waiting a year for season two to begin is too much. I could accept it starting in October and doing a split again but to wait till April can't be good for the show. The only good thing I am hoping to see out of the long wait is DG hopefully won't be doing so much PR and can do some work on book 9.

message 22: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments they knew about S2 before S1 started to air - but at that time, they were still filming the later half the season

I know it feels like ages, but when you think about it - most TV shows do a mid-season hiatus over Christmas - it just happened to Outlanders was more than the normally 4-5 weeks of commerical TV; and then they also do Summer Breaks (around early to mid May) and don't come back until mid september

message 23: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Dennis Richardson (catrionarich) | 28 comments The talk has been that there will be 13 episodes and not split into 2 parts this time which I think will be so much better. April 2016 will be here before we know it. It will give us time to rewatch Season 1 multiple times, read and reread Gabaldon books and get excited about Season 2. Casting news is exciting and I'm sure they didn't want to release any names until Season 1 had ended. I had read that the biggest casting news like Roger and Bree would be introduced at (I believe it was) Comic Con and that they would be in costume. I get excited at the new articles and photos from the Season 2 shoots that I see every day. We have to remember they have only been filming Season 2 for 3 weeks and without the biggest parts of additional cast so we have to give them the 10 month hiatus that all big shows have. I can be patient because I am so pleased with the finished product. I hope we have many more Seasons to look forward to. The 10 month break has never hurt any of the big shows that I have heard of. If anything else it makes things reach a higher, more fevered frenzy :)

If that's true it's even shorter time than Outlander -3 episodes, even if they do it in a year together, can they really cram the whole book into 13 episodes plus add all they new crap. Expect another hatchet job.

It's way more expensive in the UK, I paid only $24.00 here in the US. You should look online, I bet people are selling them on Ebay by now it's been out for quite a while here.

message 28: by Lou (new)

Lou (ouizee) | 17 comments Season 1 Volume 1 is available for £30 which is exorbitant for only half a season. I don't know why the price is so high on Amazon. There are listings on eBay for the same release for only a tenner. It pays to shop around. You are right though....they don't call it 'Rip Off Britain' for nowt!

Brizo (brizosdream) | 320 comments MJ wrote: "Brizo, you're not a fan?"
Not sure why you asked but being as you did. I am a fan of the books and the show, and the stars of the show. That doesn't mean I accept every decision of what they do just because I'm a fan. I have high expectations for both the books and the show.

I think the acting in the show is great. I'm not so convinced that the writing/editing of the TV show couldn't have be done better, I think production decisions have impacted the quality of the show. I think they cut most of the best parts of the books to add stuff that just is not as interesting. As for the books, I like most of the books, some I think have too much irrelevant details (especially about the American war stuff, and the operations Claire performs (not my cup of tea).

I say what I think (postive or negative) because I believe collectively that input is valuable to the readers, writers, actors, directors, etc. That's one input to many that they get back from fans, hopefully to make the books or show better. But like anything all you can do is be honest with your opinion, and people will take from that the things that help them, and ignore the things that does not.

Complete season due 28/09... Wouldn't that mean both part 1&2? Think I saw part 1 AU$30, but if you buy 2 DVD they have a deal price of $45. buy 3 for $55.

MJ | 207 comments Briso, you just mentioned 'hatchet job', thought I'd check.

I HATE IT when they prune a book and then go and add useless other stuff. Drives me bonkers!

Yes, I think it's a bad decision on there part when they have an audience that for the most part knows the books very well. If they are going to change or add stuff it should be better than what was in the original source material. Unfortunately that's not always the case here.
