Danila Sentyabov (dsent) | 12 comments This book:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
has some serious issues with the authors. All four co-authors are lumped into one:
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
And there is a duplicate author for another edition:
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

I think that a few new author profiles should be created. Two for the main author of the book:
1) Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexand... )
2) Russian version: Александр Сергеевич Орлов ( https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9E%... )

The rest of the authors are not very well-known, so we can just create generic profiles with their full names:
- Владимир Анатольевич Георгиев
- Наталия Георгиевна Георгиева
- Татьяна Александровна Сивохина

These should be set as the authors of the book for all its editions. And I think that this edition:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
should be merged into this one:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Arenda | 26453 comments Merged the duplicate book.
Added the 3 co-authors to both editions of the book and corrected the primary author profile.
Used the initals for the co-authors, as that is how they are listed on the cover. Added their full name to the profiles.

Is this author/book published outside Russia? When it only is published in Russia, there is no need to add the English version of his name.

Also found 3 other profile with similar names Aleksandr Orlov:
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
Can you see if one of them is the same author, according to the books?

Danila Sentyabov (dsent) | 12 comments Thanks! But I can't find the full name in the Russian profile of Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov ( https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... ). Maybe this is a duplicate?

Also I've found another edition of the same book in Bulgarian: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
It is attached to completely different book by the same authors ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... ) as an edition and there is a typo in one of the authors' names (Сивохиха instead of Сивохина). So, I think that:
- This edition: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... should be attached to this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
- The authors should be set accordingly to: Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov, А.С. Орлов, В.А. Георгиев, Н.Г. Георгиева, Т.А. Сивохина

I probably don't get something about Goodreads' database. I thought that the profiles should list the full names. It's a common practice in Russian publishing to list only initials on the cover and the full names on the second page of a book, so the full name is usually known.

Considering the links you've provided, these three are all different authors.

However, there are many problems with them and the books attributed to them. Alexander Orlov is a very common name in Russia, so there are quite a few different book authors with that name (and even full names like Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov are not unique). They are seriously mixed up here.

My suggestions ( I skipped over all the “I think that it should be…” for the sake of brevity, please don't consider me rude :-) ):

1. Alexander Mikhailovich Orlov — former Soviet spy. He is the only one of these authors widely known outside Russia.
- Rename
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
to Alexander Orlov. His books were published by this name (proofs: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-March-Tim... http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Intell... http://www.amazon.com/Secret-History-... — see the name on the covers).
- Add a link to Wikipedia article to the profile: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksan...
- Merge with this one: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
- Rename the Russian version of his profile ( https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... ) to Александр Михайлович Орлов.
- Add a link to Wikipedia article to the Russian profile: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9E%... ).
- Maybe establish some link between Russian and English versions of the profile? I saw something like in the profile of Leo Tolstoy ( https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... ) — see the link to Russian version of his profile in the description.

His books are:
1.1. The Secret History Of Stalin's Crimes
- Merge all these:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
- Set the appropriate authors ( Alexander Orlov and Александр Михайлович Орлов )

1.2. Handbook Of Intelligence And Guerrilla Warfare
- Merge all these:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
- Set the appropriate authors ( Alexander Orlov and Александр Михайлович Орлов )

1.3. The March of Time: Orlov Memoirs
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
- Set the appropriate authors ( Alexander Orlov and Александр Михайлович Орлов )

All the other books attributed to him are not his.

2. Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov - a historian, well-known in Russia.
All these books are really his:
- https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... (the same group of authors: Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov, А.С. Орлов, В.А. Георгиев, Н.Г. Георгиева, Т.А. Сивохина)
- https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... (Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov, А.С. Орлов)
- https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... (Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov, А.С. Орлов) - the actual name for the book is Владимир Мономах - as far as my research shows, it was never published outside Russia; the current name is not translation, but a transliteration of the Russian name. I think the book shoud be renamed to “Владимир Мономах”.
- https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... (Alexander Sergeyevich Orlov, А.С. Орлов)

3. Aleksander Orlov - a fictional characted made up by some British company.
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
I think that a link to this Wikipedia article should be added to the profile: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compare...
All the books linked to this profile seem to be linked correctly.

4. Александр Анатольевич Орлов - can't find any publications in other language than Russian. There is no Wikipedia page, but there is a short bio info on one of his books' cover ( https://images.our-assets.com/fullcov... ) that provided enough information for me to find out that he is a professor of this university: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...
I found his photo in the university online phonebook, I think it's ok to use it in the profile: http://voip.mephi.ru/photo_users/1951...

All books attributed to him in the profile seem to be attributed correctly, but their titles are transliterated, while they should be in Russian:

5. Александр Орлов - I really couldn't find anything about this author, even his full name. He is known only in the hinduist and esoteric religious community. There is one book that should be attributed to him:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
I'm not sure about the second author, there is no mention of him on any site about the book that I found. He is listed as a translator, but the book is in Russian and shouldn't need a translation. I'd suggest removing this author.

Wow, it took me almost 2,5 hours to sort out.

Arenda | 26453 comments I'm really sorry, but I'm going to leave this for someone else.
Don't know if there are librarians who are more familiar with Russian.

Did you consider applying to be a Goodread librarian?
See https://www.goodreads.com/help#what_i...

Danila Sentyabov (dsent) | 12 comments I've applied a few days ago, but got no reply yet :-(

message 6: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16370 comments It usually takes more than a few days, maybe one or two weeks.

If you don't hear anything I suggest you apply again and link to this post. Some work you did there!

Danila Sentyabov (dsent) | 12 comments Librarian status have been granted! Now I guess I'll have to do all the changes by myself, ugh. :-)

message 8: by Arenda (new)

Arenda | 26453 comments Good luck.
Some advice: start with small changes to understand how everything works. It is always fine to ask here in the Librarians Group if you need a second opinion from another librarian.

I'll add here the part from the librarian manual about author names in different languages, especially non-Roman alphabets like Russian:

https://www.goodreads.com/librarian_m... *Author Field
Authors with books published in multiple languages should have their names dealt with similarly to those with pen names. All editions should have the primary author name as the standard or most common Roman (that is, English-language) version of the author's name. Editions published under another spelling of the name or the name in another language should have that name listed as the secondary author.

Different editions of a book not having the same primary author can cause quite a few distinct problems. Please keep the primary author for all editions of a work the same.

lethe | 16370 comments Congrats and good luck! :-)

As Arenda says, if you're not sure about something, please ask!

message 10: by Danila (new)

Danila Sentyabov (dsent) | 12 comments Figured out that one of the books' author is, actually, yet another Alexander Orlov, different person from those 5 already mentioned here :-)
