Hi Allan, I'm new to this Group and I've just seen your comment. I don't know if you'd be interested in Empress Cixi of the Qing Dynasty - Pearl Buck's Imperial Woman is a fairly well-researched work of fiction about her life and times.I myself have just finished writing a historical epic about the life and times of the first Empress Dowager of the Qing Dynasty (Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang) who was born a Mongolian princess. She was the grandmother and adored mentor of the great Kangxi Emperor. The period she lived in straddled the end of Ming Dynasty and the start of the Qing Dynasty - very tumultuous era.
It's been a few years since I read it, but I loved
Spring Moon: A Novel of China by Bette Bao Lord. Takes place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. If you are looking for something a little more current,
Old Town by Lin Zhe takes place starting about 1930 up to the present day. Covers WWII, the takeover by Mao, the Cultural Revolution, and today's issues.
Goodness, only getting recommendations now and poor Allan posted back in June. Sorry your request for books slipped through the cracks until now, Allan. Thanks Alice and Eileen for helping Allan out
Allan, there may, or may not, be something in this Asia thread; https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The Qianlong emperor is 18th century. I don't know of many novels set in that period, but Lisa See's Peony in Love is 17th century, as I recall (it's not only a love story). So is the YA series The Five Ancestors, which begins with Tiger.
Hi thanks for all the suggestions, all the books look excellent To be honest i competely forgot I asked this 7 months ago but thats what I love about this group someone always answers.
Starting to think their may be no books on the emperors of qing during its height of power, most novels seem based either at the start or its demise but ill keep looking.
Than you for suggestions
Allan, now you've got me curious about Qianlong's reign and his consorts. One of my goals for this year is to refresh my knowledge of Chinese dynastic history. Just leafing through a Chinese history book on Qing's emperors has reminded me of Qianlong's "ten great campaigns", the most important of which were the battles to conquer the Dzungars in Xinjiang and the Khalkha Mongols. I find his beloved Consort Rong (the Fragrant Consort) from Xinjiang most intriguing (possible subject for another novel!)
I'd like to add a book that spans the period from the 1850s to early 1900s, and focuses on the career of Robert Hart, during the years between Robert’s arrival in China as an assistant in the British Consulate in Ningpo in the 1850’s, through his rise to the rank of Inspector General of China during the Ch’ing Dynasty. Ayaou, Shao-mei, Guan-jiah may sound foreign, but this powerful story explodes in its celebration of the ability of love and joy to breach the chasms between cultures, religions, and politics. The fictionalized story is based on real events in the best tradition of historical fiction. My Splendid Concubine
