How author's experience in the CIA probably played in writing such a good spy novel

I'm reading Jason Matthews spy novel Red Sparrow. It is such a great book. Very detailed...I can't help but wonder how his profession helped him write such a great spy novel. Wanted to see what other readers thought of the book.

Loved the book after hearing Matthews interviewed about his experiences. His references to Putin's obsession with exercise dovetails with recent news about Putin, an added bit of realism to this "fiction" read.
