Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) This epic fantasy centers around the character of Locke Lamora, a Gentleman Bastard(a group of somewhat honorable thieves). The book is really well written, the characters are fantastic to the point that they truly feel like real people. The plot twists and turns would take anyone by surprise. The book can be found in both YA and Adult sections of the library depending on location and I would say it truly is for the mature YA reader. There are some intense battle scenes, at least one scene in a brothel(though the content here is not explicit), drinking, gambling and plenty of other debauchery. The only thing that really took me aback was the profuse amount of cussing. Overall the book is a great story. I would definitely continue the series.

Kate | 7 comments I. Love. This. Book. I don't think I would classify it as YA, though; parts of it are pretty gruesome, there's a lot of swearing, and the characters are definitely adults.

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) As I was reading it I was surprised it had been classified as YA at the library - I too felt it was a little too adult.

Kate | 7 comments Ha, yeah, I've seen things like that. The DC library had Sunshine in the teen section, probably because the rest of Robin McKinley's books are YA, but Sunshine is most definitely adult :)

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) funny - it was the DC library that had this in YA

Kate | 7 comments I guess the DC library needs to get their #$&@ together :P

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) sounds like it. Regardless I am glad I read it! Have you read any of the other books of the series?

Kate | 7 comments There are only two books out right now. Red Seas Under Red Skies isn't quite as epic as The Lies of Locke Lamora, but it's still very good.

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) Thanks - I will have to read that too then!!
