"Things are moving right along with early progress on DreamWorks' cinematic adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's bestselling Young Adult fantasy novel, Shadow And Bone.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has now hired Christopher Kyle of Alexander fame (who recently returned to the biz after a ten-year-long break by adapting Ron Rash's complicated novel, Serena) to adapt the script, after Harry Potter producer David Heyman snatched up the rights in September, 2012.
Bardugo responded to the selection by noting, "he’s got the JLaw stamp of approval." What she means by that is The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence stars in Serena, which he wrote. Ha! Good to know where her authorial head's at, right?
Shadow And Bone is the first in a planned trilogy, with Siege And Storm due on shelves in June, 2013 and the untitled third installment to follow in the summer of 2014.
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart.
For those unfamiliar with the process, the next step will be a little while down the road, after Kyle completes his script drafting and the producers pin down a distributor.
