Marathi is a Indo-Aryan Language. Its the official language of Maharashtra, Goa, Daman& Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli in India.

It's 19th most spoken language in the world and has the fourth largest number of native speakers in India.

The first written attestation of Marathi, a document found in Maharastra, dates from 1012 CE.
The stone inscription at Akshi Taluka Alibaug District Raigad is the first clearly dated stone inscription. Marathi currently has 42 different dialects, dialects bordering with other regional languages have borrowed features of the other language too...Main dialects are:
1.Ahirani
2.Khandeshi
3.Varhadi/Vaidarbhi
4.Zadi Boli
5.Vadvali
6.Samavedi
7.Konkani[not Konkani language]/Malvani.
8.Tanjour Marathi

Marathi is derived from "Maharashtri" which was developed when Sanskrit could not become a communication language...Konkani, karvari Kannada, Gujarati, Marwari are babies of "Maharashtri". Marathi is one of them.

There are 2 scripts of Marathi. One is Devnagari & the other is Modi. Devnagarai is being used as a standard script all across which is similar to Sanskrit & Hindi script whereas Modi was being used for confidential writings,calculations in ancient days. Its like a running script in English...all the old/historic documentation in Marathi is in Modi script. Modi is said to be invented by Hemadri who was prime minister in Yadavas dynasty during 1271-1309.
