Chapter 1
Alabaster, a white stallion with a long, jet black stripe stretching from the top of his neck, to the bottom of his chest, was a fierce leader of a strong herd. He could feel sweet grass crunching between his teeth as he kept a steady watch over his herd. He wanted to stay near, a couple of days ago, two foals had been taken by, so called, humans, while playing tag the tree in the meadow.
His ears pricked, he sniffed the air, that scent was familiar. His legs sprang, he felt his hooves hit the ground, his neigh rang out as an alarm call, his herd was panicked. His legs were carrying him as fast as they could, he could feel the warm breaths of his herd, telling him they were not far behind.
He heard hooves, not of his herd, but of something else, suddenly, an unfamiliar call rang through the fresh air, which was now being clouded with dust from the chase.
He panicked, and whinnied to Esperganza, a sleek, shining palomino, to take the herd west. Esperganza whinnied in agreement, she took charge and cut off from him, the herd followed her order.
Alabaster jerked to the east, towards the cliffs, the humans, or so called rattlers, took after him, he, a lone stallion, would be much easier to catch than a herd full of spooked, raging horses.
He led them to Horshoe Peak, where the canyon ended, and there was nothing but steep rock coming from three sides, he stopped at the end when he could run no further, the rock blocked his way, he looked over his shoulder as the rattlers galloped around the corner on their horses, he looked back at the rock, he grunted deeply and lept up, his hooves scraping the rock faces, he climbed, higher and higher, as the rattlers watched in disbelief. He looked down and whinnied happily, he turned and lept, he free fell, it was a long way down, but his legs held strong. He landed with a thud, his hooves immediately jerked, taking him flying back down the canyon, he watched as layers upon layers of rock blurred by him, he loved the feel of the wind in his face, blowing through his mane and tail.
