“When you can truly understand how others experience your behavior, without defending or judging, you then have the ability to produce a breakthrough in your leadership and team. Everything starts with your self-awareness. You cannot take charge without taking accountability, and you cannot take accountability without understanding how you avoid it.”
- When stuck or in the midst of a "breakdown" try the following exercise.
These questions focus your attention on what you can do and stop the automatic behavior of fixating on what others should do. Every time you hit an impasse ask
1. Where am I not taking 100% accountability? How is my action—or lack of action—contributing to this situation or breakdown?
2. What am I withholding from others? Where am I withholding my partnership, straight talk, commitment, enthusiasm, or support?
3. What decisive actions do I need to take? Where do I need to take a bold stand, commit to the success of others, clean up a relationship, talk straight responsibly, authentically align, or hold myself and others accountable?
4. What requests do I need to make of others? Where am I complaining or conspiring with others instead of making a clear and direct request to the appropriate person? Where am I holding back and not being direct? What request do I need to make now?
