Like what kind of rules?
I think it is a fascinating concept and probably partly came from her Mormon background. When I think of imprinting I always think of baby ducks imprinting on their mother ducks.
Here is a quote from Eclipse by Jacob that explains imprinting:
"It’s not like love at first sight, really. It’s more like… gravity moves. When you see her, suddenly it’s not the earth holding you here anymore. She does. And nothing matters more than her. And you would do anything for her, be anything for her… You become whatever she needs you to be, whether that’s a protector, or a lover, or a friend, or a brother."

Thanks for posting that quote so I could read it again. I would call that fate. Would you call that fate? I have had many friends who believed there was only one person for them. I have never believed that but I know its a common belief for some.
That quote just makes believe more in fate. I think love just happen, it doesn't matter how it happens, it just does.
I tend to believe in fate also. My grandparents believed in predestination which was a super hard concept for me when I was young. Since I tend to believe in astrology I am able to believe in fate somewhat. I also believe in reincarnation and that we have to come back in the same groups in order to correct errors or work thru problems. I sure hope it isn't true but fear that it is. I first ran into this idea in a book called Green Darkness. it was horrifying and gave me nightmares. Green Darkness
