Whenever I think of conflict action thrillers, I unconsciously think about piracy. I believe that piracy is a fundamental and necessary component of the thriller plot.

I love to research aspects of novels. So, I started reading books about piracy to enrich my appreciation for and value of thrillers. I discovered The Sugar Barons at Amazon. It is a history book about the establishment of the sugar industry, and includes the culture and technology associated with it.

Here is a quote from chapter five, "The Plantation: Masters and Slaves", page 54.

"To function, the institution of slavery requires the suppression of spirit, intelligence and initiative on the part of its victims. Sugar, with its mind-numbing, simple but repetitive and physically exhausting tasks, demanded exactly the same thing. Sugar and slavery were found to be a perfect fit."

This quote is a typical presentation of knowledge in The Sugar Barons. Knowledge is the key ingredient for all of the players who were involved in the golden age of piracy, which occurred around 1700. I enjoy finding pirate's knowledge to dig deeper into thriller plots.
