Jill, I read this book a couple months ago and LOVED it. It made me be a fan of Carol Anshaw again (I loved "Aquamarine" but not her subsequent books). The characters' relationships are recounted in an insightful way, sometimes lovely, other times tragic--and comic. To me the strength of the writing is in the way it compels me to continue reading about Alice, Carmen, and Nick's lives through the tragedies (both acknowledged and unacknowledged ones) and the triumphs. As Anshaw has stated, she wrote an idealized version of the relationships between the sisters, but it really comes off as genuine and not contrived.
I read this while waiting on my copy of Raven's Heart. I agree with Baby, I LOVED it! And mostly it WAS the strength of the writing that compelled me. The relationship between the siblings and how they were affected by the girl does seem genuine and not contrived...Particularly how each seems to fall back on one of the other for support, at different times. I am interested in reading more by Anshaw, now. Even if it wasn't a book club "winner" I'm glad it was suggested so I could discover it.
