Today is the GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) sponsored Day of Silence. http://www.dayofsilence.org/ Many LGBT and their straight allies will be participating today at school. Most of us we are willing and interested in supporting and participating in LGBT issues but we live busy lives and opportunities pass us by. We know that many of you have LGBT family and friends whom you’d like to support. You will probably see a lot of references to it today so here's some information. Today those who can speak choose silence as a form of protesting the silencing of the many who suffer from anti-LGBT bullying in our schools. It is about taking the time to think about the words we say and don’t say and how they impact the people around us.

As a mother of teens, bullying and peer influence are a daily concern. Today as our youth stay silent in the hope of bringing awareness to the pandemic of harassment towards LGBT youth, we ask that you partner with them. How can you help? First look at your local school and see if there are any LGBT clubs or support groups available. Then see what your district’s policy is on bullying. Is it zero-tolerance? What are the consequences of harassment? And then most of all, find ways to show unconditional love. Together as a community we can stop the shame and hate and we can be love and kindness in action.
