What do you prefer reading? A paperback, hardback, or an electroing device eg Kindle, Nook etc?

Kimi (hateeverybeautifulday) | 7 comments I prefer physical books. Paperback or hardback, I don't really mind. I suppose paperbacks are easier to hold, but hardbacks look so great in the bookcase!!

Working at a booksellers sometimes, I have to be knowledgeable about the kindle, as we sell them in store. I do think that kindles and other e-readers are fantastic devices, but they just aren't for me.

I always thought that reading a book on the kindle/nook etc would feel weird/awkward but I actually enjoy it. I read a lot and i was getting frustrated with the lack of good books in my local library, I don't have an infinite amount of money to buy books so buying an ereader seemed like a good compromise, especially considering how much cheaper an ebook is.
I love my kindle, but nothing can beat the feel of abook in your hands whilst reading. Which is why I have bought paperback copies of some of the books that I loved in ebook form.

I always said I would never use an electronic device, and that nothing would replace my beloved books. The feel and especially the smell! But 3 years ago my husband bought me an ereader, and I fell in love. It was a very simple one but it amazed me! He recently replaced it for a Nook as my old one was having troubles keeping up with me and my Nook is fantastic. I'll still buy a paperback now and then but you cant hold hundreds of paperbacks in your hand the way you can with an ereader!

Im indifferent here! I love my kindle as it gives me access to such a wide range of books with no need to shop around for certain titles or wait for delivery! It also fits nicely in my handbag and I can access all my books via the kindle app on my phone! However there is something great about having a real book especially and brand new one, so like shona i tend to purchase books i have really enjoyed.

Hollz | 1 comments I love HAVING the books cause then afterwards you can put it on your shelf and you'll have it for the rest of your life!

HUNTER (hunterssquirrley) | 1 comments i love the book version because of the texture and smell you will never git that with a e-reader.

Kyle (Ignoble) | 32 comments If I had my way... hardcovers. Alas... I have an extreme allergy to the type of mold that grows in printed book pages. Like that old musty smell some books have? Ya... one whiff of that and I'm deathly sick for weeks. These days I just read electronically. Which has the fringe benefit of costing me exactly zero dollars and I can get one on a whim. No arduous trek to the library. So there's that. ^_^

Sandra "Jeanz" I love my kindle and wouldn't be without an e-reader of some sort now but I still love a physical book to hold and read too.
I love the cheap prices of e-books too. another reason I love e-books is that they enable me to keep my blog & my daughters blog giveaways International!

message 10: by Rosanna (new)

Rosanna Leo (rosanna_leo) I always thought paper books would be my one and only, but then my hubby bought me a Kobo! I love it! It is so fun, I can carry all my books with me wherever I go, and let's me stay in touch with emails, etc. I am completely addicted and never want to seek a cure.

message 11: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Pace (kellster86) There is something to be said for opening up a new book and breathing in that new book smell. I just don't find it the same reading off of a screen. I do have a Kobo and it does come in handy if there is a book you want to read that you may not really be too sure about. But as for those books that I love or have high expectations for, I want the physical book. On display. In my book shelf. It's like a trophy.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) I'm a converted e-reader. It took about 2 years for me prefer ebooks to paper, but that is what happened in my case. Since I often read more than one book at a time, having them all in one place with the pages marked, plus the great highlighting, note-taking, and search functions, just make me go ugh when I have to read a paper book these days:)

P.J. O'Brien I hope you don't mind, but when thinking through the response to this, I realized I had my next blog topic. So I posted it there with a shout-out back to you.

We don't mind at all PJ.

One of the other things I have to consider is the amount of books our house can hold. We are a family of 6, ALL 6 of us love to read. My husband and I both have large collections of our favourite books that we amassed before we became a family. Not to mention the books that i continue to add.
My eldest daughter went through a huge phase a few years ago of enjoying Enid Blyton, and without planning ahead we bought her every book we could find. And so it went on with various other authors. We just don't have the room in our rather large 4 bedroom house. So it makes sense to try and switch to the more space saving method of ebooks since it doesnt limit the amount of books they can have.

Our house now owns not one but 3 kindles, a kindle paperwhite and a Kindle Fire.. and with the recent addition of tablets for xmas we also have the kindle app on 5 devices. Which now that I have said that out loud sounds really ridiculous.

Ultimately I guess it doesn't matter which format people use for reading, what matters is that people ARE reading. I do love both, and quite often alternate between the two.

P.J. O'Brien We're in similar circumstances. There are bookshelves in nearly every room of the house and for the first decade or two of our marriage, a conversation about them began like this:

Me: We need more bookcases; there's no room for any more books.
My husband: We don't more need bookcases; we need fewer books. Haven't you read all of these?

He loves reading as much as I do, but interestingly enough doesn't like to read anything more than once. Our 3 children, who are in their 20s now and sometimes live at home and sometimes are off at school or a small apartment somewhere, are avid readers too. If they're here, their books are with them. If they live in a smaller place, their current favorites are with them but the rest are still here.

I'm trying to accept my husband's challenge to apply St Benedict's admonition about resources and privilege to books ("The shoes you have in your closet that you never wear are ones that you're stealing from the person who has none.") So gradually, I've stopped buying bookcases and I make myself pack into boxes and bags anything I haven't read in a few years. (Some of them get pulled out of the boxes at the last minute before making it to a charity book distribution center, but I'm getting better about that.)

I hope it becomes easier now that we have ereading devices. (It's not unusual to have one for every member in the family if all of you want to read at the same time.) As I mentioned in the blog, most new books that we're acquiring are in electronic form. As you pointed out, it helps with the space issue.

I'd have no hesitation at this point in emptying an entire shelf of printed books if I knew it was going to those who would read them. I just don't want to see my old friends getting dusty in a back room somewhere or thrown away.

My latest book is a hardback...and as much as I love the smell of a new book, boy does it make me miss my Kindle now! I forgot how heavy a hardback book can be - and how awkward they are to lay in bed with to read!

message 18: by Jess (new)

Jess | 2 comments Kindle all the way for me, before i brought my kindle i would only read crime/thriller novels but now i will read anything. I could never be without it, it is so much easier to multi task with an ereader than it is a book!

message 19: by Heather (new)

Heather Kirchhoff | 3 comments I love reading on both.
