Here is where we can discuss Elantris by Brandon Sanderson chapters 9-15.
DO NOT post any spoilers from further along in the book, this is just for chapters 9-15. Discussing events from these chapters and previous ones though is perfectly fine.

Just finished chapter 10. I don't like Dilf... he's obviously gonna be bad later on in the story... you can just tell. Even Hrathen seems a bit wary of him.

Okay, writing little spoiler notes here on some of what happened in these chapters and my reactions to discuss when people get here :) As I've realised I may forget otherwise! haha

13 - Raoden: (view spoiler)[I like Raoden's dream for Elantris, I just don't know how viable it is, which seems reflected in what others are saying. But if things get changed or the curse is reversed or whatever by the end it would be good. Also, I like Karata. (hide spoiler)]
14 - Sarene: (view spoiler)[That dastardly Hrathen! I want to know what Iadon heard! But I do like Sarene, I think she's going to make a real difference, although it will be a struggle. And omg! Had she come back like a little bit earlier or whatever then she might have run into Raoden! AH!!!! I mean yes, she wouldn't have going into Iadon's chambers where Raoden was, but I can imagine :) (hide spoiler)]
15 - Hrathen: (view spoiler)[ah! no! He's blatantly going to capture Raoden or Karata or one of the nice characters! :( (hide spoiler)]

Also, I thought I'd gotten used to the names and the people in this book, but Sanderson keeps introducing them and it keeps getting all confusing :(

I find it helps to think of how each character relates to the main three. I've read this a few times and I don't know everyone's name. But I do remember personality and relation to the story.

Anyone have trouble picturing the seons? I like the idea. But I have some difficulty actually picturing one. Are they machine? Organic?

Has anyone read Mistborn? Do you think they might be related to the shifter species in that series?

Yeah, I have difficulty picturing the Seons as well... At first I thought of them as something similar to maybe Navi from the Legend of Zelda series, but then Sanderson said they were just the Aon and a glowing light or something so... yeah...

Do you mean the kandra?

Yeah... I'm not sure why. But I picture the seons actually change shape when they communicate with each other.

Personally, I am not going to use the spoiler tag because we separated the chapters for the sole reason of being able to talk about them up to that point. I just ask no one post spoilers from further along in the book.

@Becky: I agree with all of what you said.

I don't think even Raoden expect to change Elantris, just the mindset of the people that live there. Karata is really cool too. I am guessing with her "tired" frame of mind and Hrathen's decision at the end of chapter 15 that she is who he studies. It seems to me that Sanderson set it up that way. Karata is tired and worn out and ready to pass the torch to Raoden, Hrathen needs someone to study or experiment on. They've made us care about Karata with the revelation on her past life, so it will pull at our heartstrings if/when she comes to harm. If that sacrificial lamb it leaves the main three characters to resolve any conflict without us losing them. This is all just me guessing though. This is actually my first Sanderson book, so I have no idea what is stories are usually like.

Also, maybe it is just that I like to think of myself as a strong, independent female, but I am really digging Sarene. And yes, I want to know what she heard too!

Lastly, the seon: isn't it this glowing ball of light on the cover?

Lol. Oops. I'm reading an eBook. Didn't catch the glowing light at all.
But for some reason I can't figure out if they 'show' the image of other people when they communicate or if they 'become' that person.

I think they just show an image of the person, like a hologram type of thing.
