John Grisham's novel The Associate wasn't as strong as The Firm (they were published almost ten years apart) but the opening of The Associate is a good example of creating suspense.
The hero is coaching a community boys basketball game and notices a man walk into the gym and when he looks again, the man is not there. The young coach knows something is up but his attention has to be on the basketball game and after he leaves the gym several pages later there is the next step in the confrontation.
