Demirkubuz, refers to Dostoevsky in his cinematographic mentality. His scenarios grow on the ethical dilemmas of the human condition. He usually uses basic concepts, such as love, passion, self-sacrifice, and the absurdity of life and death.

When you watch Demirkubuz movies you can feel like reading Dostoyevsky. Masumiyet (Innocence) and Kader (Destiny) are his masterpieces. Finally he made a film called Yeralti (Inside) which is adapted Dostoevsky's novel "Notes from Undergroud".

I know there are lots of Dostoyevsky fans here like me. I recommend his movies to you. Also you can find English subtitles of his movies.

I just saw Yeralti a few weeks ago and really liked it. It seems that besides Nuri Bilge Ceylan (who's one of the most interesting film directors in the world right now if you ask me)there's another Turkish director to dive into! I shall see if I can get a hold of his other films.

As for recommendations on writers, I am always interested! As for Turkish writers I'm only familiar with Orhan Pamuk who's one of my favorite contemporary writers.

There is also a strong relationship between Chekhov and Nuri Bilge Ceylan movies:)

Orhan Pamuk is one of the most popular one and you can see lots of arguments about him.

Sabahattin Ali has an interesting statistic in this country. In 2000s his masterpiece "Madonna in a Fur Coat" -which was written 70 years ago- took place on the Bestseller lists between all brand new books. (And still there) It is close to Dostoyevsky's style, has a real literary depth, most of readers think it is the best love story of Turkish Literature. I know there are Russian, German and French translations for now.

I haven't read any Chekhov stories yet, so can't tell the relationship. I can see and feel the admiration of Nuri Bilge Ceylan for Tarkovsky in his movies though.

As for both your recommendation for Sabahattin Ali, I have trouble finding an English translation (unfortunately I can only read Dutch and English) of any of his books. I do see however that there is a Dutch translation of the number 2 on the list for best Turkish litarature, Tutunamayanlar by Oğuz Atay. So maybe I try that one if I can find a decent copy!
