i liked the first movie even if the pacing was slow at first . the hobbits are funny especially pippin and merry :p i m not going to mention the addition / omission in the movie but i ll focus on the movie itself . the setting is very beautiful and hobbiton is a very cute village . rivendell's architecture was amazing and the elve's clothing were gorgeous :) i liked the sarcasm between legolas and gimli . and at the end when gandalf died it was a very emotional moment for me when i first saw the movie. i remembered that i actually felt very sad and tears were in my eyes ( i haven t read the books back then ) because gandalf was a very essential character in the fellowship and the actor ian was perfect for the role i can t picture anyone else playing gandalf and succeding in this role. the reaction of boromir towards the ring is a very human reaction toward any item of power so it was a very good point to develop in order to highlight how the human race is always searching for means to increase its power even at the price of destroying its moral code and honor . nonetheless boromir had the death of a hero :)
I LOVED this movie. My family and I went to see it seven times in theaters. I just remember sitting through the movie and watching the credits roll and my dad leaning over and whispering excitedly, "And that was the BORING book!" (not that any of the books are boring, but the first one lacks the action of the rest of the trilogy in that there are no critical battles). I think it's my favorite of the three movies, though it's hard for me to separate them, I think of them as one enormously long movie :)My only major complaint with this movie was actually the treatment of Boromir... I felt that the movie did him a great injustice.
I wrote an entire blog post on this... http://jenelleschmidt.com/a-great-inj... if anyone cares to read it... maybe we could start some "character discussion" threads??? That might be fun :)
What an interesting blog post! Aragorn is certainly a character whom you could discuss for hours, especially his relationship with Boromir (i.e when exploring the film by PJ).
Jenelle, if you would like to create a character-discussion thread regarding Aragorn, Boromir or both then please feel free to do so. It would make an interesting topic of conversation. x

The film had me at Galadriel speaking elvish in the dark. I knew at once this wasn't going to be just another film. I could have watched the shire scenes for another six hours. Really. I don't need movies to be exciting, just good. And this one was that and then some. It was exciting as well, particularly the Moria section which was absolutely superb, but it was Bilbo's birthday speech, the death of Gandalf, meeting Strider at the Prancing Pony, the council at Rivendell, the death of Boromir, those were the scenes that really carried the movie for me.Near perfect cast, brilliant cinematography, phenomenal sets and effects, intelligent script. This movie is one of the all time great achievements in cinema.
As for a character discussion thread, Jenelle, I'm all for it. I think it should have it's own board, though. Could someone set that up?
Yes, I loved the way the movie opened with Galadriel talking. I did appreciate P.J. making the female roles a bit bigger... I mean, if you've read the books, it's enough to know that Arwen is awesome simply because Aragorn loves her. However, it's harder to show that in a movie. :)

I would be more than happy to set up the discussion threads on characters... but I agree with DJ that it should have its own board, and I'm not sure how to do that, or if you have to be a group mod to do that...

Thank you! That is great :)

Ah its intriguing what you write about the female roles being portrayed in a larger and more powerful role in the films than in the books
In fact, if you were to go back and read the origins of the books pre the trilogy you will find that the female roles are huge!

For me, I am waiting for PJ to make the movie about Beren and Luthien and how their love forged Middle Earth
Luthien was in fact modelled upon Tolkiens own wife, Edith, whom he loved in the same ardent manner as he described Berens love for Luthien
It was Luthien...the elf maiden... not Beren who defeated Sauron the enemy of Middle Earth!
And of course both Arwen and Aragorn were descended from Luthien
And yes... totally love the article about Boromir... lets discuss please!
