LindaJ^ (lindajs) Anything by Bonnie Jo Campbell would fit the Michigan prong. I thought the short stories in American Salvage (nominated above) were excellent and the novel Once Upon a River is amazing.

Lilo (liloh-p) I'd like to nominate "India was One", by An Indian. The book is written with an enormous feel for language. I am really enchanted by this story and its poetic prose. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this fascinating country and its people. The fine language is an extra bonus.
