It was about time someone started this topic:) We will be discussing progressive rock/metal music and prog artists/bands here. Prog metal is my favorite metal genre ever. I can't even begin to count my favorite bands. I think i'll talk about them in my future posts. So do you like progressive rock/metal music? If yes, what are your favorite artists, bands, albums?

Ethan Minsker (ethan_h_minsker) | 5 comments Would hardcore fall under this?

What are some Prog Metal bands I might know?

No, hardcore isn't a subgenre of prog metal or prog rock, but we can discuss it in a different thread within this group.

Um, Dream Theater maybe? That is one of the most popular prog metal bands ever.

Alex | 33 comments Where shall I start?? I have a lot of favourite prog bands but my favourite always have been and always will be Yes. I love classic prog most of all... King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Van Der Graaf Generator, ELP, Craavan, SoftMachine and most definitely not Rush.

I love the big Prog Metal bands.. Dream Theater, Opeth

I'm slowly getting into more modern prog groups but it's all become too confusing and time consuming to keep up!

I guess the best thing to do here would be to share some favourite tracks from some favourite bands? I'll be back...

I've been waiting for a new Tool album for seven fucking years, when are they going to release something new? My favorite Tool is 10.000 days followed by Lateralus.

Anyway, I think I haven't listen to Yes much to really appreciate their music, maybe you should recommend me some albums, Alex! But King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Van Der Graaf Generator are my favorite prog rock bands too! I love some modern prog rock bands such as Porcupine Tree, Sylvan but most of them are really not for me.

Good idea! But we can discuss and share anything related to prog rock/metal music. news, new album releases, videos, tracks, you name it.

Don't even get me started on Maynard's wine business! I just hope the new album won't be about wines and vineyard and that kind of stuff!

Well, I was listening to APC even before Tool, so it's kind of small consolation for me. Actually these last two years haven't been much productive in terms of progressive metal. I mean, i can only remember a few good albums released in 2012/2013.

What other prog metal bands do you listen to, Raquel?

message 7: by Alex (new)

Alex | 33 comments Ok, Yes. Since this is a prog thread. I could pretty much choose anything off of one of their late 60s and 70s albums and find something to like about it a lot. I suppose Pink Floyd is the only other band I feel that way about.

So, I'm finding it difficult to decide which to post because they are mostly very long songs that take a while to get into and because there are so many of them!

Yours Is No Disgrace Despite being 10 mins long is super eacy to get into and probably one of the most perfectly written prog songs of all time. It keeps moving things forward, constantly shifting styles but never losing the thread of the initial riff and never getting boring.

The Gates of Delirium from Relayer because it has a cool name and is based on War and Peace. No, really because it has the most amazing guitar/keyboard break from 8:00 -15:00. One of my favourite records.

Don't worry about long songs, one of my favorite songs ever lasts for 60 minutes. I like long songs more than short songs when listening to progressive music. I'll check these songs out. I don't remember the title of it, but I've listened to one album by Yes, i think it featured four songs altogether and they were really long.

Alex | 33 comments Tales From Topographic Oceans is their mega "let's make a double album with one song per side" event. It was probably that. That's one record that's always torn fans down the middle and is oft quoted when people like to disparage prog as overblown egotistical dinosaur rock.

It's probably my least favourite of their 70s records because 2 of the 4 sides are a little weaker, but I still like it a whole lot.

It was a song called the light of day, day of darkness by Green Carnation.

I used to listen to an Italian prog band called Nosound. You might want to check out Polish prog rock/metal bands such as Riverside, Lunatic Soul, Indukti, Votum, Quidam, etc. That country has a knack for producing awesome bands.

But most of my favorite progressive bands come either from the USA or Scandinavian countries. And my all time favorite band would probably be Pain of Salvation followed closely by the Mars Volta or Tool or Dredg. My other fave prog bands are Beyond Twilight, Opeth, Mastodon, Green Carnation, Redemption, TSO, Dream Theater, The Mayan factor, Ayreon, Ambeon, Twisted into Form, Enslaved, Myrath, Buckethead and so on

BTW, I think you're going to enjoy Rishloo or Prisma a lot since you are a Tool fan. Prisma sounds more like a Tool rip-off but Rishloo is a really solid band, its singer sounds a lot like Maynard.

Also, has anyone listened to some good prog metal album released recently? I was just searching for new albums and come across this and thought it was pretty good. I haven't listened to something new and good for a long time.

Anytime!:) I hope you'll like them!

Dani Host Latest Katatonia stuff? If you like Opeth I think you should give them a shot. They've definitely gone prog metal in their last two albums.

I like both 'old' and 'new' Katatonia and their last album was really, really good.

message 14: by Dani (new)

Dani Host In agreement. I discovered them with the "discouraged ones" album and got hooked instantly.

Luk Lebegge | 2 comments Hi Everyone, don't you forget the amazing MARS VOLTA as a prog rock band? And what about the polish band Riverside? With a Pink Floyd sample in one of their songs.
