The main reading room is on the ground floor, while Twilight and Spike live on the second floor. There is a basement where Twilight performs her measurements on Pinkie Pie in Feeling Pinkie Keen. The building itself is a large, hollowed-out tree, which Twilight says in Look Before You Sleep is protected from lightning by a magical lightning rod. In The Crystal Empire - Part 1, Twilight magically rips the entire tree out of the ground, exposing its roots. The tree has a large beehive hanging from a branch, a candlestick sign on the front door (sometimes, an actual candlestick figure, depending on individual animation errors), a sign of an open book outside the door, and two balconies, one of which has a telescope.

In times of difficulty, Twilight often turns to her vast library to find answers. For example, in The Cutie Pox, Twilight pulls out a book called Perplexing Pony Plagues to diagnose Apple Bloom's case of "Cutie Pox". When Twilight and Spike are searching for a way to eradicate the Pinkie Pie clones in Too Many Pinkie Pies, Spike discovers a horseshoe-shaped button hidden in the back of a bookshelf. Upon pressing it, a secret compartment containing the desired book is revealed.
According to Lauren Faust, Golden Oaks Library was originally called "The Tree of Knowing"

In a Parallel universe, where the Doctor takes Twilight as his Companion, the library was called "Books and Branches Library."

There came a knock on the door, it was late and the library was closed.

Spike opened the door, standing there was a figure in a black cloak. “Um, can I help you?” Spike asked.

"yes, is one Miss Sparkle home" the cloaked figure asked the little dragon.

“Sorry, she just went to bed.” Spike answered. Twilight's snoring was barely audible.

"Same old twilie" the strange pony said with a laugh.

Spike looked at the strange pony, "So...can I help you in any way?" He asked, looking the pony up and down, wondering if it was safe to let him in.

"I take it Spike, that you dont remember me, do you?" the pony said.

Spike shook his head, "W-who are you?" He was nervous, not sure if he should take this pony's word. He stepped back a bit.

"Well then i know one pony that will remember, but boy is she going to be pissed" he said as his horn under the cloak's hood glowed azure pulling a feather from a pillow and started to tickle Twilight with it.

Twilight began to giggle and then she sneezed and awoke, "Hey?!" She glared at Spike, "Spike what's going on?!" She demanded, not pleased she was awoken, or that he had let a stranger in.

"Hello Twilie, long time no see" said the pony in a cheerful voice

She rubbed her eyes and groaned, "Who are you?" she asked, walking down the stairs and trips on the last steps. She stands up, still dreary from being awoke too early.

She blinks, "Two years?....Blade?!" She gasped, in disbelief, and advances. Spike just stares blankly ahead, "Who now?"

"About time you remember, and sorry about the wake-up call" Blades said pulling down his hood reviling his messy yellow main.

"Well I just finished a mission and was on my way back to Canterlot and thought I'd drop in. I did stop at the seamstresses in town, and I must say she is far better then I heard" he said.

"Seamstress? You mean Rarity?" Twilight asked, and Spike stepped out of the way for blade to enter the Library. "So...how do you know Twilight?" Spike asked.

"Cadence Foal sat both of us when we were little. I guess so I dont think i got her name" Blades said walking in.

"Oh, so you know Princess Cadence?" Spike said, he wanted to know more about this pony that he, apparently, should remember, "So...tell me about yourself, sorry i don't remember you..." Twilight began fixing a cup of tea.

"Yes, i know the Princess,she was my foal sitter, and a good friend of my mother." he said looking around the room.

She rolled her eyes, "I'm a PRINCESS now, where have you've been?" She said jokingly. Spike smiled up at her, proud of her and her achievement.

Twilight smiled, but Spike jumped up and down between them, "So how'd you become a knight? How's your mother and why does she know Cadence?" Twilight frowned, "Forgive him, he ate a rather magical gem and now he's extremely hyper!" she rolled her eyes.

"it's ok" he said a sadness in his eyes." my mom was a family friend of cadence, like an aunt. I really do miss her, died when I was young, dad and the rest of the Kight family too, I'm all that's left" he said

Spike frowned, "Oh...so why were your family knights?" He asked. Twilight just sat and listened, waiting to hear a tale she heard multiple times before, but it would be nice to refresh her memory.

"see, Knight is are family name, and profession. All members of the Knight family have cutie marks that barly differ from one to the other." he said showing the mark on the cloak and his own cutie mark, which stands for protective magic.

Twilight listened intently, while Spike couldn't help but bounce around.

"See long ago, my ansestor, crimson knight founded the royal knights. Now this was shortly after Celestia and Luna's brother went missing." he said.

Spike looked at Twilight, "Princess Celestia had a brother?" Twilight heard rumors of the sisters having other siblings, but they never confirmed the rumors, or disconfirmed.

Twilight frowned, "She never mentioned a sister..." She then glanced back at Blade, "And what did your family do? Didn't they help fight off some enemy of the Sisters?" She leaned in, closer to Blade.

"She didn't know about me until recently" Faith said and shrugged.

Spike looked over at Blade is shock, "fought against the Draconeqi?" Twilight's eyes widened, remebering the tale.

"Yes, they did, but the first battle went to Discord. many of the knights lost their lives that day. Even Crimson came out badly injured. he told the Princesses of the Elements." Blades said then took a swig of his tea.

Spike's jaw dropped, "B-but you know not all Draconeqi are evil, right? They might be bings of chaos but they....aren't all chaotic?" He knew he did not sound convincing, but ifblade found out about the town secret, the would be a disaster on their hands.
