10B Reads discussion

Hi everyone,
Regarding this group, I'm not entirely sure as to whether I am allowed to start a new thread, but here goes!

I was just wondering as to whether everyone has a favorite/preferred genre that they tend to read in more than others.

Personally for me, I was once a huge fan of fantasy books, with the series "Harry Potter" being why I loved reading these types of books so much!

From then on, and especially this year, I have fell in love with classical books; a genre which I would never have saw myself to be an avid reader of! My favorite book so far, is "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The language that he uses to illustrate the events and characters are phonomenal!

I tend to range widely in my reading habits, but I need to revisit crime fiction regularly between other reads, and am reading from a volume called Berlin Noir, set in Berlin pre WW2, with a maverick ex-cop private eye - very engaging & fast-paced read.

Thanks Mrs Buckland, I was aiming to make the topic quite broad so then everyone could discuss their ideas on it!

The volume that you are reading at the moment seems really interesting, and I may try to get my hands on it in the near future!

I am someone who enjoys reading fantasy, such as Percy Jackson and its follow on and offshoot series'. I have also been trying to read some new genres like mystery which I have found to be a very exciting genre which engages the mind.

I liked the percy jackson series, but the spin off series, ruined it for me.

Personally, Im not a massive fan of fantasy/mythology books, as I find it is quite boring to read something so unrealistic. However, I am also an avid mystery reader. Any books you could recommend?

I've been thinking, of reading a few biographies and autobiographies. I really enjoyed two that I read a while ago. " the happiest refugee" by Anh do
And "Mao's last dancer" by li Cunxin. Brilliant books, that are always a pick-me-up.

Does anyone have any other good suggestions?

I've read Barack Obama's biography, and it is quite good in my opinion, and I suggest you try that! Anh Do's sounds really interesting , so I'll be sure to check it out!

I have to disagree with what Aksaran just said. I really enjoy reading Percy Jackson's adventure and I have finish reading all of his series including his side stories.

Different people have different opinions! I know you're a very avid reader of the mythology genre, and love to read books like Percy Jackson, but please be mindful of the fact that some people may like different types of books.

I'm sorry but I'm just stating my opinion and not to make Percy Jackson series seem uninteresting.

Fair enough. In that case, you should recommend it in the new post/thread that I just made!

I have read Anh Dos, Happiest Refugee, and it is definitely a must read. It really relates to the situation we have with asylum seekers and to look at everything he has achieved from where he was is inspiring to read.

Great to see such a lively discussion with such interesting reading recommendations.

Don't forget to add it to your current reading shelf. Sounds like it might be worth adding to the recommendations discussion thread if you are enjoying it so much

If you're enjoying the horror genre, you might want to check out some classic horror books, like 'Frakenstein' by Mary Shelley. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but have heard many good things about it from many friends and peers.
