Only thing that has affected everyone is the radiation from a nuclear explosion ages ago.
When there was nuclear power that everyone wanted to use, major towns and cities set up power plants. Most famous countries had nuclear power plants despite what previous events had shown.
Countries that set up nuclear power plants:

• United States
• Russia
• France
• United Kingdom
• Turkey
• Egypt
• Japan
• Italy
• Spain
• Vietnam
• Germany
• India
• Canada
• Australia

The year 2029 terrorists started to sneak into these power plants and set them off for explosions. All but three countries had been attacked; Canada, United Kingdom, and Russia.
The rest of the countries were thrown into haywire. Their governments fallen, economy crashed, populations of millions were down to ten thousands. Survivors gathered food and hid underground.
By 2047 most major countries were nothing more than a wasteland of debris and dead. Animals started to adapt to their new climate. Some had their fur changed or physical form changed. But either animals died or changed drastically.
By 2055 plant life started to appear again and clans started to form. There were multiple clans before two major groups formed. Rebel Radiation and New Republic. One set out to use nuclear power as a power source. The other wanted to make the world a better place. They set up trading camps and major 'cities' with electricity and power.
When 2070 came around, human life was adjusted to the new geography and had towns and cities set up. Even if there was mutant animals and humans around, life was actually livable.
Up to the present it has been that way, the new life of humans. Choosing to travel alone or choosing a clan. Just don't get attack by mutants, they may use you for their devious plan.
