Fairest is the story of an ugly girl. Not your typical heroine, Aza lives in a world where everyone sings. Fortunately for her, and despite her appearance, she is blessed with a remarkable voice, but finds herself dealing socially and emotionally with her faulty face as she tries to stop an evil plot and discover where true beauty lies. The book borrows ideas and themes from Snow White, but expands them. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The ending actually surprised me quite a bit, and I was pretty proud of the difficult themes that Levine addressed. Although you'd probably never catch a boy reading this book dead, it's definitely a good read for the female reader, especially those who struggle with negative body image (which, who doesn't?).
