April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Has anyone read Bone The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume by Jeff Smith?
It looks pretty YA to me, and I just can't stop glancing at it online. I'm wondering if it is worth ordering?

Kandice My sons have read it over and over, but I tried a few times and just couldn't get into it. I really like graphic novels so that wasn't the problem. I think, for me, I couldn't get over the silly names given to the main characters. We have them all, so I will probably read them someday...

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I love Bone! They're funny and the illustrations are great.

Katy-Del I loved The Book of Magic. Tim Hunter, a boy in London age 13 or 14 discovers he is a magician in need of training. I think there are 6 volumes of Graphic Novels.

Our local library is very good about seperating the levels of age appropriate graphic novels. My daughter is 9, so she gets them from the children's section. I let her pull from the YA department, but I have to read them first.

Koori no hi what about serials? comics that come out with another 15 -20 pages every week. Are those considered graphic novels?

message 6: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments I think once they are compiled into one volume, then they are classified as gn

Misty | 1505 comments I think you're right, but the fact is that the term "comic book" is very off-putting to some people. Also, you tend to think of single issues when you hear it, and not a work of any length (even if a graphic novel is just a collection of once-single issues).

message 9: by Koori no hi (new)

Koori no hi I agree Heather! I can understand people scoffing at comics, though, because I used to be one of them. I never liked the super hero/men in tights thing anyway. Then I started reading Naruto. After Naruto got me hooked I've read One Piece, Bleach, Magic Knight Rayearth, Fruits Basket, Vampire Knight, Rosario + Vampire, YuuYuu Hakusho, I'm working on WagWaq, Black Cat, and Card Captor Sakura.

message 10: by Koori no hi (new)

Koori no hi One Piece is my absolute favorite right now, I'm not sure how much has been officially translated to english, but Oda-san is up to chapter 560 in Japanese and I've been reading translated scans on this site for a while
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/
There's a link to one piece. I wouldn't recommend Vampire Knight because it's a romance but if you like that stuff. Also the characters all look pretty much the same. I have a hard time telling them apart.
Black Cat is about a bounty hunter that used to be this big time criminal and he's an expert gunman
Naruto is about ninjas' but you've probably heard of that at least - it's pretty popular
Bleach I like better than Naruto. It's about this guy who sees ghosts. Then this creature called a hollow attacks his family cause they have high spiritual energy, and this girl shows up to fight the hollow, but gets beat up so she gives him her Shinigami powers so he can protect his family.
WaqWaq is short, only 32 chapters, but I like it alot too.

Sorry bout the rant... I would recommend One Piece and Bleach (even though they are long) and Tagami Bachi (Letter Bee) is my second favorite right now, and you may enjoy WaqWaq.

I immediately got the "We're men/ we're men in tights./ We roam around the forest looking for fights..." song from Men in Tights in my head.
Oh, Cary Elwes.

Katie (katiemacbride) | 14 comments I have to add--Re: graphic novels--"Blue Pills: A Positive Love Story" is an AMAZING AMAZING book. On my top ten for sure!

message 13: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiemacbride) | 14 comments oh, and Heather--Blue Pills is neither Manga NOR floppy ;)

message 14: by Koori no hi (new)

Koori no hi those are all manga hether. I do read some of them in a monthly magazine actually though. It's called Shonen Jump and only the cover and first and last few pages are glossy. the rest are regular newsprint-type paper. This magazine has like 4 chapter of each of 6 manga every month so it's around 400 pages long and doesn't feel like youre reading a magazine though.

Carol Littlejohn (carol50) | 12 comments I just took an amazing online course with Michelle Gorman, a writer of the book "Getting Graphic! Comics for Kids" with a foreword by "Bone" author Jeff Smith. The book is published by Linworth Publishing. For more information about graphic novels, manga, and comic books, go to her website: www.comixlibrarian.com

Oh! somehow I have the tiniest soft spot still for all the hours I spent with them so long ago when they didn't have anything better or maybe I just liked Phantom, the ghost who Walks. And maybe a batman movie or two and also maybe that superman loves Lois Lane even when he knows how to fly (hehe plane fares are dropping I hear11!!!)

Heather wrote: "My sweetie is a serious collector and he and lots of people on his comic book forum scoff at the term "graphic novel." They deem it as a classification given to comic books by publishing companies ..."

When graphic novels first came out, I wondered about the difference between them and comics. Finally, I did some research:

I'm still puzzled though about another question. Why are Diary of a Wimpy Kid and similar books classified as graphic novels?
