So far we have three books for August's poll. I want to put the poll up by the end of the night tomorrow (Thurs 6/27) so if you don't see a book that you're interested in reading above, make sure you put the book you'd like to discuss on this thread! Remember the theme is male protagonist.

Hello Kerry!
Thanks! As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew it was going on my ever growing "To Read" List. All the suggestions here sound great...so many good reads! I love it! :)

V. Pain (Vpain) | 63 comments Are we going to read all classics? I will provide a FREE copy of my book to go around. Getting everyone's feedback will help me for my next book, it would be even therapeutic! Can I suggest myself for Oct or NOV!? Also I haven't read sista souljah yet. It might be good for next. I haven't read but one Toni Morrison work either...

Yes you can vote for your own book. That's not a problem at all. We don't have to read all classics but I'd like to stay in the historical fiction/classics genre for group reads. Which Sista Souljah book are you interested in reading? That would be a good place for buddy ready.

V. Pain (Vpain) | 63 comments okay, I haven't grabbed any books yet. I am suggesting sista souljah because I know I am not up on that at all...

I'm not her biggest fan politically, but I did like her book The Coldest Winter Ever. Even for street fiction that was good (I really don't like street lit)! Now the follow up books Midnight and A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story weren't that great to me. But I have read The Coldest Winter Ever about 5x and every time I still give it 5 stars because it wasn't the pointless street dialog and shoot up bang bang that most street lit novels fall into, she had a message and she delivered. Even though she's not my favorite person (I think she's counter-productive) I still give credit where credit is do that was a good book with a strong message. The way street lit should be done.

I totally agree with you. I'm definitely not a fan of hers. I did read TCWE before I knew much about her and I really enjoyed the book. I'm also not one much for street lit because it glorifies a negative society with very little plot substance typically. Not to mention most have poor editing and no message. But TCWE was a great example of how to do it right! A wonderful message for this new generation in which SS calls "the coldest winter ever" in her dedication......and then I read up on her smh. Counter-productive was a great word choice for her politcal ethics. discussing black-on-black crime, she was quoted saying, "If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?...So if you're a gang member and you would normally be killing somebody, why not kill a white person?" But then goes on to say she's not racist. I can't support racism from any race towards any race. The answer to racism is not reverse-racism. I will never read another SS book. But like you said Kisha, give credit where credit is due...TCWE was a damn good book!

Yes, I did hear about that quote amognst others. Her views (in my opinion) are misguided. It is sad because she's so educated and seems to be such a good person. And I love that she's fighting for a cause but her messages sometimes are wreckless.

Chrissy I mistakenly deleted my inbox about August. Will it be on Wash?

Yes Wash is August discussion. I can't wait to pick up my copy. I haven't read it before but it sounds really good based on the synopsis.
