Abbi and Grace will be buddy reading A Most Peculiar Circumstance by Jen Turano.

Miss Arabella Beckett has one driving passion: to help the downtrodden women of America. Naturally, she supports the women's suffrage movement and eagerly attends rallies and lectures across the country. On her travels, she makes a simple offer of assistance to a young woman in need that goes sadly awry and lands both ladies in more trouble than they can manage. An independent sort, Arabella is loath to admit she needs help and certainly doesn't need help from an arrogant, narrow-minded knight in shining armor.

Mr. Theodore Wilder, private investigator extraordinaire, is on a mission. A mission that began as a favor to his good friend Hamilton Beckett, but swiftly evolved into a merry chase across the country. By the time he finally tracks down Hamilton's sister, Arabella, he is in a less than pleasant mood. When the lady turns out to have radical ideas and a fiercely independent streak, he soon finds himself at his wit's end.

When they return home to New York, circumstances force their paths to continue to cross, but the most peculiar feelings growing between them certainly can't be love. When the trouble Arabella had accidentally stirred up seems to have followed her to New York and threatens her very life, the unlikely couple must face the possibility that they might have landed in the most peculiar circumstance of all: love.

Abbi So excited to buddy this with you, Grace! So I've found the best way to do this is to split the book in half, read the first half, have a discussion, the read the second half and discuss-does that work for you? Halves for this book would be chapters 1-11 then chapter 12-epilogue!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments Me too!

That will work just fine for me. So I just go ahead and start reading it through chapter 11?

Abbi Yep!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments Okay :-D

Abbi I'm done with the first half so I am ready to discuss whenever you are-no rush though!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments Wow, you're fast. I'm on page 110, so I should be halfway done either by tonight or tomorrow morning.

Abbi Yeah-sorry! OK!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments It's nothing to be sorry for :-). I'm just a slow reader, lol. However, I have made it and W-O-W! I think I like this one better than "A Change of Fortune."

How do you like Arabella? I think she's awesome!

message 10: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi I think I'm liking it better too though when I read books so far apart like this it's hard to know for sure!

Arabella is great! I love how she's not afraid to be who she is and to take risks!

I think it's so funny how Theodore is softening to Arabella's ways and is even defending her to his father and brother-in-law!

The story about how the girls ended up in jail at the beginning was rather amusing! Especially the part with the pigs! I couldn't believe they charged her with theft and assaulting officers when she technically did neither! And they even admitted they only accused her of stealing the horse because they needed someone to blame!

Agatha once again is a extremely fun character! I love how no nonsense she is and her great sense of humor!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments This one seems to have a lot more humorous situations in it. I like a story that makes me smile, and this one has.

His softening is amusing. Especially how he has been so against the things Arabella stands for. You know, I just can't help but like Theodore.

I know, what kind of logic was that? It was the pig, guys! I don't think I would take it too well if someone accused me because they needed someone to blame. Then there is the fact that the sheriff left town, so now the town has no protection. Suspicious.

It is lovely to see Agatha and her humorous character again. It is also nice that she is still as delightful in this book. Sometimes characters change in sequels, but she hasn't.

I wasn't expecting Violet to come, and then the "investigation," though it ended in a bad way that repeats something I remember from their past, was still amusing. Katherine, who is a bit annoying, surprisingly has a bit of spunk in her.

message 12: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi I like the humorous situations too. Books that make me smile and/or laugh always rank high in my book!

Yeah Theodore is great! I love how underneath his tough exterior he's actually pretty nice! And it's so sweet how he acts with Piper, Ben, and Ming!

I wasn't expecting Violet either but it was cool! Haha yeah the "investigation" and the ensuing repeat of jail time was amusing! I agree about Katherine I didn't like her at all at first but she's shaping up to be fun!

I love how being with the Beckett's has changed Mrs. Wilder and Katherine for the better and Mr. Wilder and Harold's reaction is quite funny! I thought it was funny how they both came to Theodore and tried to get him to do something even though it's their wives!

I think it's funny how annoyed everyone is with Hamilton and Eliza's display's of affection! And it's great how they don't even care.

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments Yes, they were both a little stuffy when I first "met" them, but they are slowly being dragged into the craziness of the other characters lives. What fun!

They think that they are the one's that should be in control, so should not they be the ones to confront their own wives? If they want to be over their wives in the way that they desire, then don't bring someone else in.

I'm a little suspicious of Harold and Samuel Wilder. Maybe I am just reading something out of nothing, but their unknown activities could be something worth looking into.

It's funny how Theodore finds it annoying that Arabella does things like shop, or like the color pink. Just because she wants rights does not mean she does not enjoy doing things that ladies do.

message 14: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi I feel the same way about those two!

Haha yeah that is funny!

I laughed out loud when Arabella chased, tackled, and hit that innocent man! That scene was just so funny! I was glad he was content with the money and didn't press charges!

Everyone's fear of Gloria Beckett's driving cracks me up! I love how they all do everything they can to avoid driving with her!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments That was funny when she did that, and then Theodore said Arabella wasn't right in the head. I really liked that part.

I would want to ride with Gloria, lol. It sounds like fun!

I like how the mothers seem to be just as great friends as the younger ladies are. I found it amusing when Agatha said they were scary.

I think I would be just as annoyed if I had to be around two people who constantly displayed affections like Hamilton and Eliza. Though I don't know if I would go so far as picking a scab to try to look away :-)

message 16: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi Sorry it took me so long to reply! I was watching four kids (11 months-5 years)for almost the whole day so this was the first I could get on!

I like that too and yeah that was funny!

Haha!

I thought it was hysterical how crazy jealous Theodore got of Grayson when Arabella was "flirting" with him!

Well I can't come up with anything else to discuss-you?

message 17: by Grace (last edited Jun 21, 2013 04:22PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments That's okay :-)

Hmmm... no, me either. So, I guess that means we go off and read the rest of this tale (I will confess that I did read some more today).

message 18: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi :)

message 19: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi I'm done (couldn't stop reading) so I'm ready when you are!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments Finished it, and wow... This book was amazing! What Theodore did at their wedding was one of the sweetest things I have ever read *sniffle*

message 21: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi I agree it was AMAZING!! I was slightly worried it wouldn't live up to my high expectations but it met them all!

That was SO sweet!

I loved Theodore's grandparents! It was so funny how they were a lot like Theodore and Arabella! I think it would be so cool to read their story!

It was amusing and smart when Theodore put Arabella in the trunk so anyone watching wouldn't know she'd left. I couldn't believe he threw out all of her stuff and didn't think to pack some of it in something else!

Jud was so messed up! It always amazes me how people can be that twisted and yet still hide it from everyone around them!

message 22: by Grace (last edited Jun 23, 2013 07:27PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments It's my favorite fiction book that I have read this year!

I thought it would be cool to read their story too. Maybe one day the author will write it in a book.

The trunk part was amusing, especially how her brothers dropped it!

Jud was creepy!

I was wrong about Samuel and Harold, oops. Harold's reaction to Wallace and Carter was awesome. I think I now like both him and Samuel, as well as Katherine. It's great how I could go from not really liking some characters to liking them.

Hurray for Violet, Sarah, Hannah, and Lottie! It's nice that they got to work for Theodore's grandparents.

I did not read a lot about Felicia in "A Change of Fortune," but she's turned out to be a lovely character in this book.

The part where Theodore's carried Arabella was funny. She must love him to let him get away with that.

message 23: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi :) It's very high up on my list too but it's hard to pick one favorite with how many AMAZING books I've read this year!

That was awesome! I liked them much better by the end too!

I loved that! Such a perfect solution for them! I loved the comment Ethel made about George not being able to live without the food they made for him!

Haha yeah!

The whole jail scene was rather amusing! I laughed so hard when Theodore was counting down and the girls were discussing things as well as many other times during that scene!

I loved how everyone climbed in the carriage to talk rather than going inside and I found it hysterical when Zayne squeezed between Grayson and Arabella!

I was so happy with how everyone treated Violet and the girls! When they got to the Beckett's house, treating them as they should be treated, as children of God!

I couldn't believe that Theodore actually let Katherine and Arabella go out to the woods by themselves! You'd think with how paranoid he was about their safety that he'd have been a bit more cautious!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments The carriage scene was funny. Especially how Grayson got to sit by Arabella for a bit before Zayne cut in.

I like how they were treated kindly, I just wasn't comfortable with the statement that everyone is a child of God. I thought that a child of God mean't someone who is saved. I do think, however, that God loves everyone.

I know, why would he do that? Not smart, for sure. Funny how they couldn't hear Wallace and Carter because they were singing loudly. :-D

I liked the part where Agatha walked into the house, heard her father's voice, then bolted out the door and Zayne had to go get her.

I also liked the the part where Agatha dressed up again to make herself bait for the bad guys in order to rescue Arabella. Then Zayne had tears in his eyes!

message 25: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi I agree with you on the fact that a child of God is someone whose saved I just kinda took this statement in the more general sense of the fact that God created us all so in that way everyone is His and we should treat them as such.

Haha yeah that was great!

I liked that too! I really can't wait for their story!

I loved the scene when Theodore finds Arabella and his grandmother asleep in their chairs snoring! George's comment about it being one of Ethel's endearing qualities was adorable.

Theodore's proposal and Arabella's reaction were quite amusing! And I loved how Arabella turned around and used the same words on him!

It was hysterical how Mrs. Murdock had mistletoe everywhere at the party and how hard Theodore tried to avoid it!

message 26: by Grace (last edited Jun 24, 2013 02:08PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments That makes sense.

I am excited about their story! I wish it was next, but I look forward to Felicia and Grayson's story now that I "know" them a little better.

It is funny to read, but it's nice that I wasn't actually in that situation. It would have been awful and awkward to be at a party like that. I'd try to do what Theodore thought he was doing, find a spot where there was no mistletoe and stay there.

Words can be a powerful tool. Especially in this book, lol.

It was funny how Theodore left things up to his almost eighty year old grandfather. Like at the end where Theodore and Arabella kiss and George interrupts.

Also, at the party, the switching dance partners was funny. I think Grayson took it well, and Felicia did a good job of stepping out her comfort zone.

The part when the captured ladies ganged up on Jed's partner was funny. That's what he gets.

message 27: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi Haha yeah that was funny!

I loved that! I was impressed that Felicia was able to pull it off!

That was great!

Well I couldn't find anything else to discuss-do you have anything else?

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments I don't either, except to thank you for asking me to do this. I've enjoyed it. :-D

message 29: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi :) Yay I'm glad you enjoyed it! It so much fun to be able to discuss books you're reading!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments It is! Maybe we could do it again with "A Talent for Trouble."

message 31: by Abbi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abbi Yes! That sounds awesome! And maybe we'll have some other books to do it with too!

Grace Mullins (evergraceful) | 31 comments Awesome! We'll just have to keep updated on which books we both have read and haven't read.
