Reader's Choice Book Club--Frisco Public Library discussion

It's crazy to think of a one-word summary for this novel when I respond to it in so many ways--it makes me feel despondent, even hopeless, at times; other times, I'm laughing out loud (once I got used to the crude soldier-boy talk and antics). But one word keeps coming to mind when I think of the characters involved: "disconnect." Which may be part of the novel's appeal- admit it or not, a sense of disconnect is something we have all experienced at one time or another. Do any of you readers have a descriptive word that comes to mind for this book?
