What are your favorite Non-Fiction books? Subjects?

message 2: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) Religion not that I am particularly but the way all the religions are constructed and what people believe in

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I like a lot of spiritual books myself. Religious is OK for me but I like to be inspired more than preached to. Not that there is anything wrong with religious literature. I have read quite a few.

message 4: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) I am dipping into the biography of Jerusalem at the moment it is amazing how many religions have claimed the city as their own.

message 5: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (shazzacatzz) | 45 comments I enjoy memoirs but not usually those of celebrities. I also enjoy history, books about organisation and more practical books like art and craft, gardening, health etc

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Sam, I would love to read that book in the future just to gain a historical perspective if nothing else. Sounds fascinating.

Sharon, I don't like reading memoirs of celebrities as a general rule either. Unless you consider coaches celebrities. I do like reading some of their memoirs. Most of them are extremely positive and uplifting.

message 7: by Rick (new)

Rick Shepard Okay, as lame as this sounds, I'm a huge horror movie fan, and have been my whole life. I love reading books about horror movies, the actors, and the people involved in their production. I also enjoy history, and the subject of 'books about books'.

Rick, I've got a book that you'd probably love (and maybe have, given your comment) - The Nightmare Never Ends is an awesome guide to THE NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series, probably not too hard to find on the used market. Tales from the Crypt: The Official Archives is a favorite of mine in this area, as is The Evil Dead Companion.

It's strange, but for all the books on horror movies I have, the majority deal with the classic Universal films or films from other studios during that time. I'll have to poke around for the ones you mentioned, especially The Evil Dead Companion. I was told the Bruce Campbell autobiography Leading With My Chin, was pretty good too. Thanks for the suggestions!!

Diane | 76 comments I am reading Half the Sky and am finding it fascinating, although it is not a book I would say I love.

I was just looking for the book you mention and there are multiple books by this title. If you give me the author, I will check it out sometime.

Holy cow Chuck! And you need to add MORE to your diet? LOL

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I definitely need to start reading more non-fiction.

message 15: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC Cindy wrote: "Holy cow Chuck! And you need to add MORE to your diet? LOL"

Yeah, I really do. I bet it's not even 10% of what I read. It kind of makes me feel bad.

A couple I know are in my future:

A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing

The Way of the Knife

message 16: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC Gulp Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach too.

Oh yeah, and I am most assuredly going to read: The Center Cannot Hold My Journey Through Madness by Elyn R. Saks

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

That is impressive! Wishing you a happy adventure into your further exploration of the non-fiction world.

Thanks Cindy!

Dustin I find the inner workings of any/all writers to be utterly fascinating! I'm also interested in musical biographies, particularly the Classic Rocks greats, such as No One Here Gets Out Alive, Grateful Dead: What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been..

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I love anything Grateful Dead. What was that term they used to call us? Oh yes! Guess I'm just a Dead Head :-)

message 21: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I just read Steven Adler's autobiography, My Appetite for Destruction: Sex, and Drugs, and Guns N' Roses. I thought it was pretty interesting, about like a train wreck. I liked it, but I'm glad to be done with it.

message 22: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson was an excellent book! I've read it twice.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I need to get some non-fiction reading in soon myself Chuck.

message 32: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC We should read DEVIL'S KNOT, Cindy. LOL! Get it? The devil's not Cindy, lol. How could anyone think it? hehe

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

We could. LOL

message 34: by Holly (new)

Holly | 140 comments I have a few president biographies that I'd love to get to. Also one about Benjamin Franklin.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a couple of Abraham Lincoln biographies I would like to eventually read.

message 36: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I wanna read: The Mad Sculptor The Maniac, the Model, and the Murder that Shook the Nation by Harold Schechter .

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

I had to look that one up Chuck. After reading the synopsis, I don't recall hearing of this one. Sounds interesting.

I have a few on him too Cindy. I hope to be able to get to them sometime next month.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

If you remember, let me know a couple of days before you start and I'll see if we have any of the same books.

message 40: by Holly (new)

Holly | 140 comments Okay, sounds like a plan.

message 41: by Emily (new)

Emily Morgan (emilymmorgan) | 4 comments I love biographies and travel books. But right now I'm actually writing a non fiction book for single parents, so parenting is my new fave genre!

message 42: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 5 comments I am reading mostly all NONFICTION. The biographies and autobiographies are a special feeling to have read. And if I read any other, nonfiction? It's for learning history about an area, and whatever is interesting.
