Ground rules here: if you can't be civil, stay away.
These discussions are very personal, and can become quite heated, so remain polite at all times; no insulting, no berating, and no judging.

Mormonism is a pseudo-Christian religion begun in 1830 by Joseph Smith, in the New England area. The Mormon church, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, denies the historic Trinity (teaching three gods), says salvation is by grace and works (2 Nephi 25:23), and that people have the potential of becoming gods and goddesses. Some of its unique doctrines of the Mormon Church are that God used to be a man on another world who became a God and came to this world with one of his wives. We all are literally born in heaven as spirit brothers and sisters and then inhabit human bodies on earth. For more information on this cult, please see Mormonism on CARM.

Following is a listing of Mormon Teachings cited from Mormon writers.

There are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163)
There is a mother goddess, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443)
God used to be a man on another planet, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321)
After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pages 345-347, 354)
God resides near a star called Kolob, Pearl of Great Price, pages 34-35; Mormon Doctrine, p. 428.)
The Trinity is three separate gods, (James Talmage, Articles of Faith, p. 35)
God is increasing in knowledge, (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 120)
God has the form of a man, (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 3).
God the Father has a body of flesh and bones, (Doctrine and Covenants, 130:22)
God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children, (Mormon Doctrine p. 516)
We were first begotten as spirit children in heaven and then born naturally on earth, (Journal of Discourse, Vol. 4, p. 218).
Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163)
There is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet of God, (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, p. 188)
There are three levels of heaven: telestial, terrestrial, and celestial, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 348).
The Holy Ghost is a male personage, (A Marvelous Work and a Wonder, p 118; Journal of Discources, Vol. 5, page 179)
Baptism for the dead, (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. II, p. 141). This is a practice of baptizing each other in place of non-Mormons who are now dead. Their belief is that in the afterlife, the "newly baptized" person will be able to enter into a higher level of Mormon heaven."

Thats a lot of stuff....

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

No, I'm Christian, I just find other religions very interesting,

message 6: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) I wouldn't call him crazy. I would say mislead. So John what do you yourself believe? That would be a good question because you pull out a lot of doctrine but is that what you believe as truth?

message 7: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 25, 2013 07:03PM) (new)

Seriously I'm Christian also why in gods name would I lie about that, and of course there's a lot of doctrine do you really expect not to put that in there. I own a copy book of the Book of Mormon but I also have the Koran and other holy scriptures as I said I find other religions interesting.

message 8: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) So you believe that I am going to hell?

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

No I don't.

message 10: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) Okay so I don't need to believe Joseph smith is a prophet to get salvation. good to know.

How does baptism for the dead work?

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

What.

Back up, guys. Just cool it.

@DH: John was listing the things he knew about Mormon doctrine. He was not agreeing with Mormon doctrine.

@John: right?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Correct.

message 14: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) That was what I meant by asking if that is what John believes.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

No I don't believe in that.

message 16: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) Okay sorry if I sounded rude. I was trying to get information and what you said was very confusing. I apologize for the miss understanding.

message 17: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) Why was that split into two words when I posted it?

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

No I should be the one apologizing so I'm sorry for the ways I posted so sorry for the confusion.

message 19: by Mojoboy31, Kitchen Ninja (new)

Mojoboy31 | 3210 comments Mod
Well, since we're apologizing; I'm the one who moved the post from its original place, and context.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't apologize You did what you were suppose to do as a mod.

I could given the first post in this thread more context.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

You just did what you thought was good and either I think it might have ended the same way or close to it.

Really guys?! Are you just going to go back and forth now with whose fault it is? How about this, I made the group and I SAY that NO ONE did ANYTHING wrong!

@ DH: You didn't do anything wrong. You just asked questions.

@ John: You didn't do anything wrong. You just provided information.

@ Mojo: You didn't do anything wrong. You just copied and pasted what John said. You even said on top that this is information from John!

OK. No what that is DONE, we can continue ;)

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Your welcome ;)

message 26: by Maximillian (new)

Maximillian (maximillianthefirst) I did act like a jerk and I am very sorry that was poor judgment on my part. I have a sore spot when it comes to Mormonism and I should not have assumed what I did. I am sorry to you John for putting you under fire. I am sorry to you Mojo for disrespecting your rules.

Thanks paige.

message 28: by Chris (last edited Jun 30, 2013 02:25PM) (new)

Chris | 43 comments I want to share my opinion, but at the same time I don't want or intend to be rude either to those who are actually Mormons, so I'm just going to sugarcoat it.

I've been a Christian all my life. But I know someone who is been a Mormon all of his life. He's like 75 years old and he's an old friend of my family. So I know about this kind of stuff and the thing is, Mormonism is like all false prophet speech. I mean let's be real here: how was God a man before he became a God? I know God sent his Son Jesus who is also God, but that's the notion of God becoming Man to save us from our sin. But He never was a man turning into God BEFORE the creation of time and reality. I mean, if THAT was possible, then where was God and how was He born?

I also learn from the Mormon guy that when you're a Mormon and you die and go to Heaven, you live life in Heaven all over again. Like you grow up, you work hard, study hard, and then raise your kids well, and then boom. If you do all of that well, you become a God and you own your own planet. I honestly think that this kind of Heaven is another world altogether, not Heaven. I mean, who'd want to go to Heaven to work hard again?

EDIT: Okay, forget the first paragraph. I just read it. :p

message 29: by Chris (new)

Chris | 43 comments "Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163)"

That's the one thing I don't like about Mormonism. The belief that both Jesus and Satan are brothers. The good twin and the evil twin. Black and White. Mario and Luigi. Starsky and Hutch. You know the drill... I don't like it. Why? Because Satan was a fallen angel and in the category below the Archangels and below God.

Two, I also read somewhere online (though it's been a while since I read it, I'd have to find the link again to share), that black people like me, are--how should I put it nicely--not destined to enter the Heaven, because they are marked by the Devil.

The thing about Jesus and Satan being brothers doesn't make sense, because it says in John: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son...."

It doesn't track.

Yea... Chris knows his stuff as good as John ;)

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm a mormon...

notyourfriend (amemori) | 4058 comments Mod
So tell us, how is it like?

message 34: by Chantae (new)

Chantae B. I don't really believe in the Mormon teachings because I was taught what the cristains believed. So they think that people can become gods? I actually didn't know that we'll a few of the things I didn't know. But I was always wondering what the difference between Mormon and Christian were.
