I feel that I need to address something that while it is not yet an issue nor has it been, but I feel that I would like to clear the air beforehand. By now, most of you know that Paula Deen has been fired from Food Network, that Smithfield ham has dropped her as a spokeswoman and that she is caught in a maelstrom over a word that used to be acceptable over 150 years ago.
I do not condone what she said, whether it was in jest or not to a potential client, said to an employee or with a gun to her head. I do understand that her generation grew up with that word, along with Jim Crow,so the word for her may have a different connotation, but it was still wrong of her to use the word.
That said, I will not delete or prevent the re-posting of any of her recipes since her personal feelings do not reflect on her food or how it is prepared. I do ask that members refrain from making non recipe related comments on any re-posts that occur. What was said was not acceptable, but I will not stop a good recipe from being shared based on personal politics.
