Jonathan | 9 comments A little bit of stalky geek, a little bit of witchery, a pinch of sick baby brother, an all round great story. I wonder where I have put my copy, it is probably time to pick it up again.

Jonathan | 9 comments It won various awards like the Carnegie Medal when it came out and pops up in top 10 romance lists sometimes. It is billed as a supernatural romance, and both bits are done very realistically (this is praise from me) and thrillingly. You can read all sorts of tosh into it about the witchery being a metaphor for our heroines transition from girl to fully fledged lunatic/ er grown woman, but it is superbly told and has very touching relationships, full of awkwardness and charm. Ah, my sales pitch is clunking up.

Anyway like DWJ, yes and no. Insightful like DWJ was when she was at her pomp, has flashes of amazing imagery, overall more restrained, slightly toned down to keep the power of mystery.
