Anything by Isaac Asimov. He has written The Foundation series and The Robot series and many short stories.Try downloading and reading his short story "The Last Question". Will not take more than 20 minutes to finish but will blow your mind and stay with you forever.

I have read the Prelude to Dune trilogy. They were wonderful. Also Dune and Dune Messiah.. these 2 books are less about Science fiction but more about politics.Pandora's Star by Peter F Hamilton is due for a read shortly!
Just a doubt, is 1984 science fiction? i thought it was dystopia???
