Saturday we reviewed a lot of this books themes--Urban vs Rural, anti-village-ism, Changing American Values, etc.

One of the things that we talked about was the transformation of Women's Rights during this period.

Mike sent me the following quote to build on that discussion:
//begin
…could not have understood the growing modern idea of a woman's owning herself and giving and taking for her own ends in life.
//end

Which I think is a helpful pointer for this topic.

What is odd, is that in my reading, I am not getting a strong sense of anything from this--I mean the themes may be there, but I do not sense that The Narrator [whoever that may be] or the author really much cares one way or another about the theme--it is just writing not polemics, if that makes sense.

I anticipate that this opinion of mine will change, but one of the things that I am really struggling with is like the sense of ambivalence I feel in the book. This may just be me, but at some level I get the sense that nothing in this book actually matters at all...to anyone...
