I prefer books with two characters who stay together throughout the book/series. But the phenomenon of the love triangle rages on...

So, which is better/do you prefer, and why?

I prefer a book that has two characters which develop a relationship throughout the book. Love triangles are overdone and boring.

I prefer a growing relationship throughout the book because I love to see the characters evolve and grow together. It gives the them a sense of depth that adds to their individuality. Its just a great experience for the reader to see characters building a lasting relationship together. Tris+Four= win. Sam+Astrid= win. Alex+Darla= win. Clary + Jace= meh...

But that Katniss/Peeta/Gale Bella/Edward/Jacob Lena/Alex/Julian stuff? Puh-leeze.

≈aleх: pнoenιх oғ тнe ғlaмe≈ (loveisendless) I LOVE love triangles! They add a plot to the story that keeps me on the book 24/7.

:) to each his own. I'm reading a book now with a love triangle and its not completely bad, we'll see where it goes.

Josey (got2read11) | 71 comments I honestly prefer love triangles (don't kill me haters!!). They keep you guessing throughout the whole series. I prefer a choice to be made at the end of the series. That being said, I hate stupid love triangles (the ones that you know who will be picked from the beginning, the ones that drag on f o r e v e r, the ones with two perfect guys and she just can't choose *oh gee*, etc.) Examples: 1. Scarlet by A. C. Gaughen (that's a great book, but the love triangle is stupid) 2. The Selection/The Elite by Kiera Cass (JUST CHOOSE MAXON ALREADY, AMERICA) 3. Prized by Caragh M. O'Brien (perfect people annoy me).
Anyways...

The dedicated relationship gets old after one book, especially if it has been there since the beginning. If the series is about them falling in love, but they don't know it until the end, then I don't mind so much.

Lina (booksnotlovers) I'm kind of torn. For contemporary novels like Nicholas Sparks and whatnot, I like the stay-together-forever-people. But for fantasy/YA books, I kinda like the love triangle. Vampire Diaries, True Blood. But when I read House of Night I was all.. Wow, Zoey Redbird, what a traaamp.

message 8: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) Oooh. Love the love-triangle in The Hunger Games. Because it's not the main subject of the plot, it's just a little nice sub-plot, that shows us that Katniss is just a regular teenage girl, so we can relate to her easier.

Me too. If you are going to have a love triangle, it needs to be sorted out in 2 books. Once you are in book 3 and it's still triangling (I just invented a verb for being in a love triangle!!), I start banging my head places and throwing the book across my room

I know what you mean. The Hunger Games bothered me so much with the the whole Peeta/Gale affair. I mean, just CHOOSE already!!! She didn't have any time to actually be in a relationship because all three books were wrapped up in her trying to decide. *Ugh*

message 11: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) But the point of the story wasn't about her being in a realtionship though. It was about saving the dystopian world.

Besides, it was clear from the beginning that she would choose Peeta. Because if she'd really been in love with Gale, she wouldn't have fallen for Peeta in the first place.

But she still had to think about it for all three books!! Why Katniss why?? It's like The Selection. Everybody knows that America will choose Maxon, but Kiera Cass apparently is a fan of corporeal punishment because she insists on making us read A WHOLE NOTHER BOOK before America stops being a indecisive stupid idiotic little crybaby (sorry, I really can't stand that love triangle). Katniss should have made a decision earlier instead of making me want to tear Mockingjay in half.

I should re-read this series, because I have forgotten so much. Katniss was never a fan of Peeta loving her though, so when the thing happened, she probably saw it as a good way to turn around and run so he wouldn't fall in love with her again. idunno.

message 16: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) Yeah, maybe. But that is incredibly stupid of her though. Yes, he understood her, but if she didn't love him.. They would end up in misery in thirty years. Next book from Suzanne Collins - The Divorce Games.

Bethany (beth_ess_xx) | 10 comments It depends. I like love triangles when the actually add to the plot and chacter development but not when there just put in for the hell of it. I'm not a fan of romance, but I prefer a relationship to develop between two characters through the course of the novel.

message 19: by Bookishlor (new)

Bookishlor Just read a love triangle book with cheating. Not a fan especially the cheating but I kept reading because it really was a good story. Just wish 1) the #2 guy would've exited stage left sooner (GO AWAAAAY! No one wants you) and 2) the author would've found a different way to cause friction in the first place.

On a side note, I firmly believe that there should be disclaimers if there is cheating involved on the cover/description! Maybe short like movie genres - love triangle with rock stars, cheating and drugs but a happy ending. Um no thanks, not tonight! Feeling more of a medieval teenage love with dragons and castles.

message 20: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean My feelings on love triangles:

I don't like love triangles. They take away from the story and all your obssessed about is who the main character is going to pick and if its going to be your choice. If it is you're happy, if it's not you're pissed. It's not worth it.
Then the author has to find something for the loser of the love triangle to do to make their lives worth living. The loser almost always falls in love with someone else which makes the love triangle that took place for god knows how many book, pointless. Like in twilight. Jacob was so in love with Bella but then when she chose Edward, Jacob fell in love with Bella's daughter. I mean come on. The whole damn series was about who she picked and once Jacob lost he fell for another character. Bella couldn't have been all that important then.
Or if that doesn't happen then one for the members of the triangle dies or sacrifices themselves or something like that and the Main character is with the other guy/girl by default. Its dumb and their frustrating.

And don't get me started on insta-love. lol

I'd rather much have the devoted relationship. Although I don't really have to have romance in a book., especially when the romance takes over the plot. I hate that

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I am fine with both. Love triangles add interest sometimes, but then they can also be really annoying, so I think it depends on the plot.
