One of my personal favorites is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. It's just such a beautiful, fun movie. I really love it.

Some of my least favorites: Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Eragon.

So what do you think are some of the best and worst book-to-movie adaptations?

message 2: by Bookishlor (new)

Bookishlor The newer Narnia movies have been great. Hands down Lord of The Rings and right now I'm liking The Hobbit. Seems a little darker which is probably Guillermo Del Toro's influence. Just have t wait for the other two now. *SIGH*

Least would be Twilights. They started off okay, fell flat in the middle but I think picked up on the last two movies. But honestly i thought that of the books too?

Oh I'd totally forgot about LOTR! I only saw the first two, but yeah, they were really good:) Loved the second!

message 4: by Bookishlor (new)

Bookishlor OMG! Okay you have to watch the last one! And for crying out loud, please watch the extended versions. They left out several things from the books including one of my favorite scenes between Faramir and Eowyn.

I remember sniffling in theaters on the first one on the big scene at the end with Gandalf. They did a really good job bringing the characters to life.

I REALLY need to watch it. I've been wanting to re-watch the first two and watch the last for the past year. I just never got around to it...

Lina (booksnotlovers) Why has nobody mentioned the hunger games? They were amazing!

Lina wrote: "Why has nobody mentioned the hunger games? They were amazing!"

Eh, I didn't like the movie that much. It was okay.

message 8: by Bookishlor (new)

Bookishlor I think because there was a lot of things unsaid in the book that just weren't touched on in the movie. It was good. Hoping next two are great though. Now the actors were amazing! Loved Lenny Kravitz.

message 9: by Bookishlor (new)

Bookishlor Okay forgot earlier! World War Z was amazing! Loved it! Haven't read the book yet though. on the list! I would be interested in hearing how it compares???

On a side note.....Dear Hollywood, More classy dramatic end of world horror movies please. Tired of these overdone slashers with blood spewing everywhere. Not realistic. Bring back Vincent Price and The Exorcist and The Poltergeist.

message 10: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Well thw movie is not out yet but The Mortal Instruments...love the books read first three have to get the others. I am also reading the prequel trilogy to those books The Infernal devices. I think some of the characters for the movie are all wrong, mainly Jace.

I liked a Series of Unfortunate Events, but I never read the book, so I'm not sure how good the movie is in comparison.

Oh my gosh I know right?! They completely screwed Jace up. I hope it doesn't ruin the movie.

Krista (krista28) | 8 comments I like the Time Travelers Wife movie because it brought out the same reactions I had to the book.

message 14: by Joudie (new)

Joudie | 22 comments I watch the Time Traveler's Wife because I haven't had a chance to read it, but I totally loved it. I can't wait for City of Bones or Divergent! The person playing Tris in Divergent is perfect :)

message 15: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) I'm so stoked for Sea of Monsters and Catching Fire right now. I'm re-reading Catching Fire in the event of the movie (and I hardly ever re-read a series unless it's HP)

I'm not even going to bother seeing Sea of Monsters. They changed the plot so much in The Lightning Thief I'm not even interested anymore.

But Logan Lerman is in it. He's such a kitty._.

message 18: by Angelli (new)

Angelli (angchelle) | 69 comments I totally agree with Jenn, Eragon was the worst... so much different from the book thats impossible to continue wiyh the sequel movie. And thats such a shame 'cause the story is great if told complete.
I liked the hunger games adaption but nohing compare to the book. But anyway hoping for catching fire!
HP movies is a diferent kind of mixed feelings... I love the books since the first one, and with the movies at first I was mad with the changes but then, I got to appreciate others things that came to life from the book. And that parts I loved.
Im totally gonna see City of Bones and Divergent, hope they dont dissapoint!

I think the female lead will be really good. Not so sure about the guy they got to be Four. :/

message 23: by Bailey (new)

Bailey I am honestly so nervous for The Fault in our Stars movie to come out. It is my favorite book and i just feel like it's personal to me. I don't want people saying they love TFIOS when they haven't even read the book. I honestly will find it offensive.

Yeah I HATE when people do that. They're all like "Oh I love the Hunger Games!" and then you'll say something about a detail in the book and they're like "oh, I only saw the movie...." It's like, you should've just said you liked the Hunger Games movie. People drive me crazy.

message 25: by Bailey (new)

Bailey I just feel like sometimes i want books to be mine. I don't want anybody else to talk about them because they feel like they were written just for me and then other people think that too and i just want to cry.

message 26: by Bailey (new)

Bailey "And i thought about how many people have loved those songs. And how many people got through a lot of bad times because of those songs. And how many people enjoyed good times with those songs. And how much those songs really mean. I think it would be great to have written one of those songs. I bet if i wrote one of them, I would be very proud. I hope the people who wrote those songs are happy. I hope they feel it's enough. I really do because they've made me happy. And I'm only one person."
-Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Thought this was relevant with my thought.

I forgot Forrest Gump. The movie was good, at least I thought so, but then again, I didn't read the book so...

message 28: by Matt (new)

Matt Stewart Oh what a fun question. I never get tired of discussing this one. This seems obvious to me, but I will not include movies adapted from books I have not read. So works like The Godfather, Stardust, The Bourne Films, etc. get knocked off.

Best: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Harry Potter series, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, To Kill a Mockingbird, In Cold Blood, The Grapes of Wrath. The Hunger Games was decent.

Bad: Twilight (to be fair, I hated the book as well), Eragon, Man in the Iron Mask, Jumper, Phantom of the Opera.

I'm sure there are many more, but I could not think off the top of my head.

Josey (got2read11) | 71 comments Asch's Anti-Paradigm (JennTheAwesum) wrote: "I liked a Series of Unfortunate Events, but I never read the book, so I'm not sure how good the movie is in comparison."

The Series of Unfortunate Events was a good movie, but nothing like the books. It's the Lightning Thief bad.

Best Movies:
LOTR
The Phantom Tollbooth
The Princess Bride (confession: I haven't actually read the book, but it is the BEST MOVIE EVER)
Les Miserables (also one of my favorite movies ever)
Life of Pi (that one was just like the book)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (I liked the Movie Better than the book)
Julius Caesar (the 1953 one)
Macbeth (the 2010 one and FUN FACT: Lady Macbeth plays one of the girls in the factory at the beginning of Les Miserables)

Worst Movies:
The Lightning Thief *sniffles because non-readers will never know what their missing*
Series of Unfortunate Events
Ella Enchanted (That movie may be worse than Percy Jackson. The plot was completely different from the book and when I completely, I mean that it was the difference between Cheesecake and a bran muffin. BRAN MUFFIN)
Eragon *makes gagging noise in the back of throat*
Inkheart
Alex Rider (you disgust me movie script writers)

Wow, you actually read all of that. Congratulations. Anyways those are all I can think of right now.

OMG SOMEONE WHO FINALLY UNDERSTANDS. The Lightning Thief and Eragon were just AWFUL. Like, omigosh I can't even contain it. I never saw Inkheart. I saw a commercial for it when it came out and I was like "Oh no uh-uh that looks so stupid. I am not watching that." Though the books were okay I guess.

The Princess Bride ROCKS. It's so lame it just amazingly great.

Have you seen The Sea of Monsters yet? I went to see it yesterday and I really didn't think it was possible to get any worse than the Lightning Thief.

But it was.

They changed mythology.

That's right. They changed mythology.

And raised Kronos. And had Percy kill him.

No circe. No guinea pigs. I think I'm still in shock.

It wasn't.

At all.

Well Mr. D was good, but that was it.

Twilight, the first movie, was completely awful.

Good: angels & demons, bridge to terabithia, water for elephants

Bad: davinci code, the host (they should be ashamed bad)

Was good but became bad much like the books: true blood (sookie stackhouse novels)

Better not be bad: divergent (I love the casting!)

Movie better than the book: the notebook
