The book mentions that law enforcement pulled the cars from the swamp, and ends with the famous scene in which Mrs. Bates has taken over Norman's mind, and wouldn't even hurt a fly.
Alfred Hitchcock's film has this scene, but then (I believe) it ends with a car being pulled from the swamp. I haven't seen the movie in years, but I thought it implied that Bates would be released, and would recover the car (with the money) someday.
Am I mistaken? Does this final scene actually exist? Because in the book, anyway, Norman wasn't terribly interested in the money. Would he really want to dig out the car? Or is it just supposed to be law enforcement removing the car?
He finds out about the money later on when everyone is looking for Mary. Robert Block wrote sequels to his first and there are also 4 Psycho movies (only the first one done by Hitch).
